I don't know how long curling irons are supposed to last. I bought this brand on the recommendation of my stylist. It worked fine for a while; I used it about once a month. And then last week it fritzed and got super hot and burned my hair and now it won't get hot

Purchased 6/2010, reviewed 6/2014:  Well, better late than never. I bought this curling iron for my wife, after reading online reviews. She LOVED this curling iron. She liked that it heated up fast, opened and closed well, gripped her hair when she wanted it to, and let go when it was supposed to

  Details on my star rating: Why did I ding this by one star? Well, although I would buy it again in a second, Amazon's star system equates four stars with a "like it" and five stars as a "love it." I could imagine some engineering tweaks to their design that would eliminate the issues we had. Also, I saw the inside of it when I was working on it, and although the parts were adequate, I would be cheating a curling iron with better quality parts that deserved the five stars, if I were to give this one five.  As I've said in other reviews that I've written, to me, either four or five stars is a "buy with confidence" in my book

  The power cord doesn't tangle and the temperature controls are small and out of the way. I appreciate that Hot Tools has constructed this iron by separately screwing in thumb clamp, and not just using the little metal stand to hold it in. I'h had irons in the past, where the little metal stand you use to prop up the iron is actually what holds the thumb clamp to the iron itself. So if something happens and the little stand gets knocked off, the whole iron falls apart

 It gives my hair the look of sweeping inward, without a stark contrast to the top part of my hair that the iron isn't curling. I love how much volume I get when using this iron on all my hairs layers separately, and I especially like how it works to give my hair direction, more than curls. 5 inch barrel, mostly for curling the ends of my hair in. I have thick hair, that I tend to let get very long before finally cutting it. I'm usually looking to just curl the hair under for a finished look and to add volume, rather than using an iron to make actual curls in my hair. I ordered this 2 inch barrel Hot Tools iron to see how it would work for how I style my hair, and I found I really like it

 It looked really loose and I was hoping for just a larger curl. My hair is very coarse and has medium thickness. My hair also is naturally very curly. Overall the end look is nice and it’s a nice curling iron, just wasn’t the look I was going for

 I like the custom heat settings because I don’t want to damage her hair. My two complaints are that the little stand doesn’t hold it very high off of the counter, and I wish the plastic piece that you use to open it were larger, as the exposed metal gets hot and I worry about letting her use it herself and burning her fingers. Overall this seems to be a good quality styling tool.
