I don't think there's a way to get around the front zipper issue unfortunately and just doesn't sound like the sling is a match for your use case! If I were you I'd look at more of a fanny pack then a sling! Maybe the heimplanet one? Or I have a mantis from Arc'teryx that functions really well as a sling and fanny pack!.
