The 4 Best Laptops Under $500 - Spring 2022

Sorry HotHardware.com, but the Lenovo Duet, a mid-range Asus with a 7th gen CPU, and last-year's Acer Spin 713, with 10th gen CPU are hardly the "best of 2021", at least spec wise. The Duet may be beloved, for its features to price ratio, and the Spin 713 sure was nice for its time, but there are newly released models out with 11th GEN CPUs, Ryzen APUs, USI stylus support, and other more modern advancements.

Just bought the full bore 2021 Spin 713 (i5, 256GB, Evo-certified, etc.) at Best Buy today for $529. It's awesome, especially at that price. This thing just flies!

Last week Best Buy had a Chromebook Spin (2020 model) with an i3 and 4GB of RAM on sale for $280 and it looks like it's back! I hadn't seen a review for this model so I pulled the trigger and wanted to give some of my thoughts for anyone else who is considering it.

First off, I want to clarify that a few months ago I started seeing a sharp decline in the battery life of my Surface Book 2015. As a recent college grad, I didn't really have much money to replace a high-end i7 with 16GB of RAM so when I saw the Chromebook Spin on sale I knew I had to pull the trigger. I'm still using the surface book but I needed something I could take to cafes and on trips and at 3 pounds, it's considerably lighter than my surface book + UAG case which is about 5 pounds for a 13.5-inch Laptop.

The Spin has been negatively sighted for being a little "chunky" but honestly, I don't see it. It's not as thin a pixel book go but I doubt the vast majority of people are going to have an issue with its size. It's got a beautiful screen and there aren't a lot of 3:2 laptops out there so to be able to stick with a 2k screen and 3:2 ratio for under $300 was incredible. Bonus point for the one hand to open hinge design.

**The Bad**

I'll do this first because it's fairly short. As far as speed goes, I kinda knew what I was in for. It doesn't take a whole lot for this thing to trip up and I find that to be especially true with some android apps. I think it's more so the ram that's lacking as opposed to the i3 but this isn't going to be silky smooth 100% of the time as the reviews for the i5 with 8gbs of RAM mention. If you're using it solely for typing and browsing on the go like I am, and you have a second laptop or a desktop for more powerful tools this is still fantastic. The 64 gbs of internal storage could be an issue for some but I have Google One and this isn't a concern at all for me. Still have 40 gbs left and probably won't use much of it.

 I've been getting adequate battery life the past couple of days \~8 hours or so and it's nice that it boots up faster than my surface book. I also got really used to using a 3 finger swipe-down gesture on windows that aren't here and that was a little annoying at first but that's more on ChromeOS.

Honestly, lots to type here but #1 is value. I brought it to my parent's house this weekend and asked my dad to guess the price. He currently uses a 2019 MacBook Pro and He guessed it cost anywhere from $600-$800. He was shocked when I told him it was $300 and as an IT guy, really impressed that it had Wifi 6 built-in. The connectivity is up to date too with Bluetooth 5.0 and my personal favorite, ports on both sides. I'm not quite sure what charger it came with is charging but I really like that it can charge off my 45w phone charger as well. Carrying only 1 cable with me wherever I go now is going to be a game-changer. The integration with my pixel 6 is really nice too and being able to use my phone to unlock it kind of makes the lack of biometrics not nearly as bad. About as good as my surface book for media consumption too.

 I've got 10 hours and 43 minutes of runtime on our streaming video tests, which is good, but in general use You're looking at more like 6 hours of straight use, but that's going to depend on your display brightness what you're doing. Still, it's not bad, but something like a Sirs Chromebook 7:14 lasts a couple hours longer with similar specs. It does charge quickly though, getting you up to four hours on a 30-minute charge. And with USB C ports on both sides, you have more flexibility when you plug in

 It's more premium than we're used to seeing in the category. So usually a premium Chromebook is about four hundred five hundred dollars, and this one starts at eight hundred. So what exactly does it mean to be a premium? Chromebook Well, for starters, this one is made from magnesium alloy, so it's a nice lightweight but still sturdy build compared to those plastic cheap models that you're used to seeing. So on top of that, the magnesium alloy makes it really lightweight

 This is considered a premium Chromebook It's actually a two and one, and at $800 it's more premium per premium premium. er, just more premium. It's more premium than we're used to seeing in the category. So usually a premium Chromebook is about four hundred five hundred dollars, and this one starts at eight hundred

What I'm coming to realize after much research is that the X series is not that much smaller than my T480s, and until the X280 they are actually *heavier*! I managed to find mine at a huge discount on eBay, advertised as second hand but it came in its original box and feels untouched. If anyone's looking for a cheaper Chromebook I highly recommend a similar method of acquiring one. I think it's not uncommon for casual users to buy a Chromebook and then realise it can't do everything they were used to with Windows, so they end up on eBay cheap and barely used. I was able to snag this one from ebay

 That's £5 cheaper than a Lenovo Duet, and for what I understand to be a much worthier machine.

I was a little worried about not going for the i5 version (my original parameters were an i3 or i5 and 8gb of ram) but after research suggested to me that the performance difference was negligible for my purposes, and much cheaper, I bit the bullet. And I'm so glad I did.

Asus Chromebook Flip C436 review: pricey, premium Chromebook

From what I've heard and read the Acer Spin is fantastic and the higher screen resolution really tempts me. The 2:3 aspect ratio screen is said to be good but I'm not sure whether it's good or bad thing for my use. Generally I favor the wider aspect ratio but my experiences from it are from very different computer / TV usage period, so nowadays the 2:3 might actually be the thing for me. A bit on the the fence about this

Out of all the possible candidates I've narrowed my options to two, both of which share a similar price in my area. The options are:

I actually already ordered Acer Spin yesterday but today I noticed a 20% price drop on it as well as on Asus Flip, so what I'm doing is I will contact the seller and ask whether they will change my price to the lower one or whether I will just return the device unopened and then make a new order with lowered price. Really hoping they can do the former because it's much less hassle, but it may be they aren't allowed to and I will have to return it first.

 The speed is lightening fast 2. It is extremely easy to use. I set it up & played around with it for a couple of hours, and learned a ton about the ins & outs of the Chromebook. 3

 But the device’s greatest weakness — its battery life — is a significant mark against it. Meanwhile, alternatives like the Pixelbook Go and Asus’ own C434 have lower-powered processors, but still offer good performance and much better battery life at a lower price. If the C436 were cheaper, it might be in the mix. At this price point, I don’t think it is

A big reason for C436’s price jump from its predecessor is that we’ve gotten a processor bump from the C434’s entry-level Core m3 chip. My test model (the base model, priced at $799) has a 10th Gen Intel Core i3-10110U processor coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage — a generous amount as far as Chromebooks go. That chip would be underpowered among Windows laptops, but Chrome OS is a more efficient operating system and an i3 more than gets the job done here. 

 Throw in the upgraded processor and it’s not surprising that this thing burns through juice pretty quickly.
