Comfort

Atlas Packs Athlete

(1/2)

Important: Choose the Adventure or Athlete hip belt – otherwise you will have literally no padding on your hips. I don’t recommend using the bag without a hipbelt either. The Adventure belt is more comfortable as it provides two layers of foam padding and a wider webbing and buckle – it’s also bigger and bulkier.

The only downside of these straps? There are no elastic keepers to tidy up the excess dangly-ness. There’s also no option for a hip belt, but at 24 liters we don’t think you’ll need one—especially not with how comfortable this pack is, even when loaded to the max.

Hiking

Atlas Packs Athlete

I also purchased a Capture Clip from Peak Designs which allows you to fix the camera to the shoulder strap in place while hiking – a great addition to this pack.

Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24

I use this pack in wood waxed and the matching Full Moon hip/butt pack on a three day hike through the Grand Canyon. I would not recommend this application for everyone as I traveled extremely light for a multi day hike but both packs performed exquisitely. From the difficult hike in, through the bushwhacking in the canyon, to the treacherous climb out I could rely on them to keep my stuff both secure and comfortable on my body. They show little signs of wear even after being dragged across rocks that cut up my boot soles

Compartment

Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24

(1/1)

Less roomy in the main compartment and laptop compartment than expected. I find pulling the top to open more difficult than convenient. I would recommend reversing the direction of the inside mesh pocket zippers on the side flaps of the main compartment as they are difficult to access quickly. Would also recommend a small area of MOLLE and a small area of Velcro on a portion of the exterior of the bag

Carry-on

Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24

I've carried the UA 21 for the last few years and always wondered if the dedicated laptop compartment and exterior water bottle sleeves were worth it... so I finally got off my butt and made the jump

Strap

Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24

(1/3)

There is some seriously thick, seriously dense foam in these shoulder straps—probably about half an inch thick (based on very scientific eyeball measuring).
