Comfort
Atlas Packs Athlete
Important: Choose the Adventure or Athlete hip belt – otherwise you will have literally no padding on your hips. I don’t recommend using the bag without a hipbelt either. The Adventure belt is more comfortable as it provides two layers of foam padding and a wider webbing and buckle – it’s also bigger and bulkier.

REI is my bag for off days. Super comfy as well. I believe the mountainsmith is 25 liters. Both great packs
Hiking
Atlas Packs Athlete
I also purchased a Capture Clip from Peak Designs which allows you to fix the camera to the shoulder strap in place while hiking – a great addition to this pack.

I started with a Porter 46 as well several years ago. After trying a few different bags I'm currently using an REI Ruckpack 28 and really dig it. YMMV though as hiking capability was more important to me than things such as a clamshell opening. I also really liked my GR1 slick from Huckberry but the lack of a ventilated back panel made me look elsewhere after trying it on a few hikes
Compartment

Someone did an video review on the REI Ruckpack 28L and he wonders why the laptop/water bag compartment has a false bottom but not padded.

Size

I have a feeling that something just slightly bigger than 28L would be best for winter, or at least a 28L that isn't tapered at the bottom/top-loading like the REI Ruckpack is.
Strap
Rei ruckpack 28
Strap system is comfortable with built in venting and good adjustable sternum strap. Love the two side access zippers and hidden side pocket on one side. Hidden "daisy chain" on front of pack for adding accessories or lashing stuff to the front.
