Comfort
Atlas Packs Athlete
Important: Choose the Adventure or Athlete hip belt – otherwise you will have literally no padding on your hips. I don’t recommend using the bag without a hipbelt either. The Adventure belt is more comfortable as it provides two layers of foam padding and a wider webbing and buckle – it’s also bigger and bulkier.
Surge
Another point deducted for comfort as well on the surge. Definitely meant for taller people (I'm 5'8")
Hiking
Atlas Packs Athlete
I also purchased a Capture Clip from Peak Designs which allows you to fix the camera to the shoulder strap in place while hiking – a great addition to this pack.
Surge
So for past thru-hikers, have you noticed this type of thing being an issue and would it be worth it to bring something like that mentioned extension to mitigate the situation? If so, any other lighter suggestions. If not, perhaps this is just an unwarranted concern. I just want to verify before I decide on a 30w power brick.
Compartment
Surge
Best laptop compartment I've ever had on a pack (false bottom, separate compartment).
Carry-on
Surge
The Porter 46 is a carryon and the Black Hole counts as a personal bag. Bags are carried like a sandwich, one on the back, one on the front. More comfortable than you would think and also balances the weight. You look like a stereotypical backpacker from a mile away, but it's only when moving around

Strap
Surge
The surge 2021 looks good too but the shoulder straps look like they will fall appart in 2 months.
