That was years ago, when I did my tanto hace hollow ground version of this guy dead, centered, really good deployment and lock up so now, let's see how it handles the baton and after Tawney how the deployment is. I would never be doing this with any other type of folder, but we are testing it and saying

Cold Steel Recon 1 - Clip Point New Version

 I haven't tried to start fires or baton with it yet, but the blade looks built to take both.  At 5.6 oz., this thing is a beast

 I understand that the action can be loosened to drop-shut, but it comes tight, one-hand opening, probably best to two-hand close until you can break it in a bit.  This is not an urban/suburban edc unless maybe you're law enforcement.  I have better knives and better steels, but IMHO, at under $100, this is an absolute steal (no pun intended). I have an intended use for it (not a weapon), and am more than satisfied

 In short, it's overbuilt for box cutting and package opening--but it will certainly handle those kinds of tasks.  But for what it is, a rock-solid folder and a huge hunk of very sharp S35vn, it's a great knife.  What this knife is not: it's not a toy. If you need a fidget toy, this is not your best choice

Closest thing you'll find to a fixed blade

 The grip is way too smooth. The older ones were much better. I've owned the knife for a couple of months now and blade does not close all the way. Very disappointed for $110

The build is so so. The blade is so poorly ground and dull that I would not buy again. Extremely difficult to sharpen and get a good edge. Every other Recon 1 I've owned (this is my fifth) was razor sharp and perfect

I think I've had pistols that are smaller than this knife. It wasn't the length that got me, it was the height. Just too big for a pocket. Having said that, the handle was great

In my search I was looking for a knife with a light weight, low profile, and with a thinner blade for slicing, not a bush beast to baton and chisel with. I wanted a good steel, a 3 1/2" - 4" blade, and either G10 or micarta scales. The search lead me to purchase the Recon 1.  My first impressions are as follows:  1) It's a well built, quality knife with great attention to detail

 The blade closes dead center with good detent, and locks back with a very distinct "snap" as the triad lock engages. The triad lock mechanism is amazing!  4) I'm not a fan of coated blades on folding knives, but the finish on this one is uniform and appears to be good quality. It's not a powder coat, plastic or epoxy coating that adds texture or thickness to the blade so I'll live with it. The main reason I don't like these types of coatings is that as they inevitably scratch and wear, they take away from the visual appeal of the knife, moreso then an uncoated blade

Be aware, It might scare the timid people in the room.
