Size
Osprey Arcane XL
2. Osprey Aphelia (26L) ($100): This pick is slightly better size-wise & has chest/waist straps that would be great for the day hikes you plan to do, but the laptop compartment (15”) may be too small for you. I also think this size is a bit too large for everyday carry & day hikes.
Zipper
Laptop
Osprey Arcane XL
The laptop compartment should fit a large laptop and it's well padded. There is also a smaller front pocket that is good for quick access items like snacks or a hat. The main compartment has a asymmetric zipper that may annoy some, but it allows the pack to fit in a large stretchy water bottle pocket, which is important especially for a pack used in schools. The material is soft but tough and it is DWR coated
Commute
Osprey Arcane XL
I use this bag for commuting to work, and have also used it for day hikes and 1-2 day overnight trips to visit family. I don’t really have any complaints. Great quality materials/craftsmanship and it’s backed by Osprey’s warranty.
