I am a new backpacker, trying to be as light as possible. I have put together this gear list together with the help of an REI sales person and some personal knowledge and was wondering if anyone has any input (things i need to add/remove, things cheaper elsewhere, etc..) anything would be greatly appreciated

 So, let's see, if you get what you pay for, we recently went on our summer family, vacation to Sun River Oregon, which was awesome. We did a lot of sightseeing. We did some kayaking bike riding and a lot of hiking, but we wanted to go to places that a stroller just couldn't take us most likely due to rough terrain. Even the awesome Bob stroller wouldn't be able to make it through some of these spots, and we wanted to do this to expose our baby to new things in the world

 They'Re a little too small, in my opinion, they're probably best served for storing energy gel, but not necessarily a GPS or your cell phone, or anything like that. Probably a multi-tool could fit in there, but they're just a little on the small side. In my opinion, I find that the canopy velcro sometimes makes it difficult to open and close that canopy. I just feel that it gets stuck

 It provides good visibility of the contents that are stored in there and they're located all around the child carrier. I also like that it has an adjustable sternum strap for on-the-go adjustment as you're hiking. It'S very easy to use and a nice touch. I really like that

Osprey will replace the bag for me for free, but I'm wondering if I'd be better suited with a Farpoint 40 or similar. I've used the Porter 46 quite a bit but only truly onebagged with it once, for a 3 week trip to Japan. It was very spacious (I bought a ton of souvenirs and also I overpacked for the trip since it was my first onebag trip) but I found it too massive, unwieldy, and uncomfortable to carry it full-time.

 Finally, the back panel seems to be regular, nylon fabric, so it provides little airflow, and means that you'll end-up with a sweaty back fairly quickly.  If you don't plan to carry this bag for long periods of time, I think it would probably be adequate; the organization options and the foam side "wings" allow for very easy packing and unpacking. But, if you value comfort of carry more, as I do, this probably isn't the bag for you. In that case, you might want to look at the Farpoint 40

First, the organization in this pack is awesome. There are several good pockets in the main, interior portion of the bag; there's great organization in the outer "office pocket;" the laptop pocket is now positioned in the separate pocket right next to the back, so your heavy laptop is positioned close to your back for better weight distribution. Plus, there's a flat pocket in the front, a top quick-access pocket, and straps and foam side walls to cinch-down your load. These are all great features, but I ended-up returning it for one major reason: it's just not comfortable to carry

 But, if you value comfort of carry more, as I do, this probably isn't the bag for you. In that case, you might want to look at the Farpoint 40. It doesn't have the organization options, but it is much more comfortable to carry. If only Osprey would make a pack with the Porter's organization but the Farpoint's suspension

Adequate, but not great

This is the Osprey Porter 46, it's the largest Porter pack that still remains carry-on compliant for domestic travel. It'S perfect for travellers who plan to go pretty lightweight and minimal during those weekend, business, trips or impromptu adventures. One of the things I like about the Porter is how flexible and malleable it is. The sidewalls are padded but they're not heavily framed

 There is a big lockable zipper compartment where you can store a laptop up to 15 inches. This is a really great way to keep your computer in an easily accessible area, while also maintaining its security. It also doubles as a framing aspect. If you have a computer in there, the large main u-shaped zipper is also lockable, and I really like the fact that this pack design almost keeps the zipper hidden

 There are reinforced loops where you can attach a daylight pack. If you have one - and there are also D rings - to attach a shoulder, strap which can be sold separately. The handles on the outside are also reinforced and padded, so you can quickly pick up and head out if you don't have time to deploy the shoulder straps. So, if you're looking for an easy-to-use and super organized pack check this one out, the largest carry-on compatible Porter for domestic flights, it's the Osprey Porter 46, thanks for watching

 and now this thing is small enough that we can compress it down, get it below that 9-inch limit to fit as a carry-on So instead of having to use those top compression straps, you can use these straps on the side which really help you squish this bag down. These side panels are kind of heavy, but they really help compress the bag down. So now it looks a little bit more like the size of a carry-on and I got this thing down to nine inches. So now we're good to take this thing on an airplane

 These two cubes are medium-sized Eagle Creek Specter Tech Packing cubes. and they're compression cubes so you're able to get quite a bit of stuff in here. These things are 10 inches wide by 14 long by about 3 or 4 inches deep. and these things work great

 I'll start off by packing the bottom of the bag Generally, as far as weight distribution goes, you want your heaviest items to be on the bottom of the bag towards your back, and we'll accomplish that by having the laptop here. and then we're gonna pack these heavy, dense packing cubes on the bottom of the bag. These two cubes are medium-sized Eagle Creek Specter Tech Packing cubes. and they're compression cubes so you're able to get quite a bit of stuff in here

 So now it looks a little bit more like the size of a carry-on and I got this thing down to nine inches. So now we're good to take this thing on an airplane. This is what the pack looks on me with less stuff in it and I can already feel quite a bit of difference in the way. It just feels a lot more comfortable

How to Pack Osprey Porter 46

 You can see it's getting fatter but everything fits and then even here these side areas because of the way the bags design I mean you could stuff items in the sides. I'm like running out of things to put in here, but you can really stuff this thing full and as you can see, it just zips right up no problem at all. It's a little bit fat, but I mean it'll still fit in the overhead. and I don't think you'll get any trouble from the airline even though technically 46, it's too big

 whatever else was important I'll put a link to this bag - this thing is awesome and then you've got yourself. Essentially add a pack with whatever you wanted to put in here and you can still check the Osprey bag because the problem is I would not want to check this bag if my laptop was sitting on the top here I wouldn't trust the airline, you know I feel like it could get cracked I've had TSA crack a screen on my Macbook before. Took almost six months to get my money back and it was not fun. But anyways, this is a really solid bag

 I Have a copy of my passport and you know, a bag of crushed up tums. I Feel like they could have been more creative with that, but whatever. So this backpack model the the electronics pocket is on the front which is interesting for me because I Work on my laptop. this is actually my girlfriend's laptop I Work on my laptop

 but these waist straps come out of the bottom here and these things are great. You know their floppy enough to be able to go away, but you know, really thick, sturdy, nice thick strap. and the buckle is very high quality as well. Feel like you know it's really well-made stuff

Osprey Porter 46 - Review after 6 Months

 It’s a serious design flaw when you can’t close you’re backpack and your hurrying to catch a plane or keep up with you mates. All in all was happy with this pack and will use it I’ve future I’ll just have to remember not to catch those zippers in the lining.

 It was very difficult to free up the zippers and frustrating. I did manage to get them free, but only with help..osprey needs to correct this

Overall Great travel pack, fits as carry on, not for Appalachian Trail type backpacking , has one design flaw.

 I will be carrying this, now black pack for weeks at a time so I wanted something that didn't revolt me every time I looked or lifted it, yep it is just a color. If you find it at a cheaper price then go for it, but maybe wonder why its at a cheaper price. The photo on here doesn't really show the true color, so just be warned about Castle Gray, whatever kind of color that's supposed to be.

My criteria: work stuff and packed clothes and such to be separate, so I can walk off my flight, into my client site, and not worry about showing all my clothes to everyone while I take out my laptop, without having to carry to bags. This bag accomplishes this amazingly well with a laptop pocket at the back, and two front pockets that accommodate your 'work bag' stuff

 Meanwhile the super roomy middle is just like a small carry-on! I'm a woman - fairly tall at 5'7", but I still thought this looked like I was going backpacking across Europe on me - so I opted for the 30, which has all the same exact design features, and just happens to be smaller, but again - I'm a super efficient packer, and it's just 3-4 days, so it will work wonderfully for me, and looks a bit more put together on me. I also opted for the castle grey in the end, because I felt it was a more flexible, but still very professional looking color. My husband kept this one, because even though he technically doesn't need it, he fell in love with it and said we should have 'matching' bags ;-) sure.
