I am a new backpacker, trying to be as light as possible. I have put together this gear list together with the help of an REI sales person and some personal knowledge and was wondering if anyone has any input (things i need to add/remove, things cheaper elsewhere, etc..) anything would be greatly appreciated

 So, let's see, if you get what you pay for, we recently went on our summer family, vacation to Sun River Oregon, which was awesome. We did a lot of sightseeing. We did some kayaking bike riding and a lot of hiking, but we wanted to go to places that a stroller just couldn't take us most likely due to rough terrain. Even the awesome Bob stroller wouldn't be able to make it through some of these spots, and we wanted to do this to expose our baby to new things in the world

 They'Re a little too small, in my opinion, they're probably best served for storing energy gel, but not necessarily a GPS or your cell phone, or anything like that. Probably a multi-tool could fit in there, but they're just a little on the small side. In my opinion, I find that the canopy velcro sometimes makes it difficult to open and close that canopy. I just feel that it gets stuck

 It provides good visibility of the contents that are stored in there and they're located all around the child carrier. I also like that it has an adjustable sternum strap for on-the-go adjustment as you're hiking. It'S very easy to use and a nice touch. I really like that

 Not only is this great for sun protection, but it also helps when it's really windy. We live in Colorado, so sometimes when you get on those higher peaks there is intense wind and while this is mesh, it does help break that a little bit and make the kids feel a bit more comfortable.   I unfortunately got the black model, which is entirely black, including all belts and buckles, making them impossible to see or find in dim light.  Making them a contrasting lighter color would make sense. I would also liked to have seen the top lid be both 'floating' and removable, rather than sewn on.

  I can't understand why they designed a 'fast and light' style pack like this with placement of the side water bottle pockets which makes them impossible to reach while hiking.  They could have added a side entrance to those pockets, as they do on the Aether and Atmos models.  The tiny, weird pocket on the shoulder strap also seems pretty useless, and a waste of valuable space that could have been used for a larger, stretch pocket which could actually hold a smartphone or GPS.  The hip belt pockets were decent in size, but also placed strangely far back on the belt, and extending the hip belt padding another inch or so forward would have been more comfortable as well

Great potential, but some deal-breakers for me

I have a Kanken 17 Laptop bag which I use for minimalist travel. It is great at being packable and lightweight. Dedicated laptop sleeve is nice as well. It isn't the most comfortable compared to something like an Osprey Talon, but it blends better in an urban enviroment

I'm   planning on replacing my huge 30L just porter sable backpack with   something a bit smaller in the 20L or larger range.  I am tired of these   start up backpacks and want to try something from a more established   brand and there's a Fjallraven store near here.

I narrowed it down to the

Fjallraven Ulvo (not sure if I should chose the Zip or Roll top)

or the Kanken 17 inch laptop version which is their largest one

I like both because of their minimalism. but having a hard time to choose between both.

the Kanken 17 says its wind and water resistant, but I assume its not as good as the Ulvo in the rain

[REQUEST] Fjallraven Kanken 17 or Ulvo

 This little strap here is for a quick deploy of your hiking poles, so rather than having to take your pack off to get access to your walking poles, you can just undo the bungee cord, pull out the pole, go about your business, and then when You finish with it, drop it back in the hole, put the bungee cord around it, and then your poles are strapped away safely, ready for when you need them next time. I'm not sure exactly how long I've had this pack. Uh, I think it's a couple of years and used it on many day trips and overnighters. Although the materials are lightweight, this is 1

And then you've got your standard sternum strap with a built-in whistle and you've got a little magnetic connection there for, um, the bladders that you can get to fit inside here for your water. small pocket on that strap i use that for hand sanitizer and then there's a waist belt for taking the loads

 It's usually between 100 and 140 quid and for a pack at that price, it should really come with a waterproof cover, which it doesn't so that's going to set you back another 15 or 20 quid. So the Osprey packs are by far the most comfortable that I've used. Um, I do recommend though that you get them fitted properly. So either go into the shop and make sure that you get the right size for you, or have a look at the Osprey app where they do have like a some kind of virtual fitting that you can do on there

Why I like the Osprey Talon 33 Backpack

* My pack (Osprey Talon 33) is getting worn. It would be good with something lighter and perhaps a bit larger. I can currently fit all my gear and rations for \~2 days. A bit more space for food would be welcomed

 You know? For me going with this pack, there really wasn't much of a weight issue. It's a very lightweight pack and if you even pack it pretty full, it's not going to be too bad for what it is and what it costs. Definitely a great pack, one that I can definitely see for light day hiking. Now the con: I did have a few issues first as you saw the breathability was not as good as I had hoped

 so if you choose to put like tent poles in here, it's not going to poke holes through the nylon. The compression straps are nice, they can go on either the outside of the pocket or the front side. Now the compression straps and the clips. They are a little bit thinner and smaller and that's an option to save weight

 Then you've got a compression strap over the top which if you wanted to put a rope through here and put your crampons on top, you can just secure that with that strap. Also helps to pull the load in. keep it nice and secure. Quick-release buckle there

 by Justice a shoulder strap Holyoke is on a Velcro pad which slides down here your little markings on here so you can adjust this suit your height that comes in two different back legs. So it's important you get the right size to suit the length of your back. not an assembly site. it's all to do with the length on the back

 So my advice to you is if you're packing your packet, then you want to keep things dry to use waterproof stuff. sacks like these. So these are all the bits and pieces that I'm going to be after a day hiking. I've got spare hats and gloves I Got the trusty jet Bowl So I can have a pro first aid kit I Got an extra thermal layer, waterproofs, some additional clothing just in case

 Here you can see the compression straps on the outside so you can compress everything right. Then you get a stretch mesh pocket on the front great for shoving wet waterproofs soggy Gators that kind of thing into and at the bottom you'll notice a little slot you can put a tail light on there red light from the bike if you use Mr. Cycling just to give you a bit of added safety top pocket simple zip top pocket keep the essentials you want to get two hands though in mind I've got by a soil water filter and on the head torch GPS and compass those bits and pieces that you need to get to quickly tuck away at the top. The pack is fully hydration compatible, so it'll take us about a two and a half to 3 liter bladder quite easily
