Osprey Porter 46 vs Osprey daylite

Osprey will replace the bag for me for free, but I'm wondering if I'd be better suited with a Farpoint 40 or similar. I've used the Porter 46 quite a bit but only truly onebagged with it once, for a 3 week trip to Japan. It was very spacious (I bought a ton of souvenirs and also I overpacked for the trip since it was my first onebag trip) but I found it too massive, unwieldy, and uncomfortable to carry it full-time.

Finally, the back panel seems to be regular, nylon fabric, so it provides little airflow, and means that you'll end-up with a sweaty back fairly quickly. If you don't plan to carry this bag for long periods of time, I think it would probably be adequate; the organization options and the foam side "wings" allow for very easy packing and unpacking. But, if you value comfort of carry more, as I do, this probably isn't the bag for you. In that case, you might want to look at the Farpoint 40

However, when I cinch the shoulder straps up to where I want the pack to ride, the "handle" between the shoulder straps rubs against the back of my neck and is really uncomfortable. I end up loosening the shoulder straps and letting the back flop around a little to avoid this. Gave it to hubby to try and he had the same complaint.

Other models I'd consider, similarly sized with solid laptop storage, are the GoRuck GR1 (both the 21L and 26L version will fit a 16" MacBook Pro or similar) and the Tom Bihn Synik 30 (thicker laptops might not fit). The Osprey Daylite 26+6 has a decent laptop sleeve with a quick-access zipper but not a separate padded compartment like I'd prefer.

the water bottle shouldn't have to push into, and compete with space in the main interior storage of the bag. The reason this actually matters is that the main storage of the bag is quite small and narrow. 3) The lip of the fabric that overlaps the main zipper pocket of the bag does not have enough slack in it, thus making it difficult to open and close the zipper. I've owned a lot of backpacks in my 36 years on this planet, and I've never had such trouble opening and closing the zipper of the main pocket of a backpack

I will be carrying this, now black pack for weeks at a time so I wanted something that didn't revolt me every time I looked or lifted it, yep it is just a color. If you find it at a cheaper price then go for it, but maybe wonder why its at a cheaper price. The photo on here doesn't really show the true color, so just be warned about Castle Gray, whatever kind of color that's supposed to be.

6 years later I still use it as a daily commuter bag for laptop etc. It has endured multiple trips to Asia, Europe and Central America. It's my go to for light hikes, bike rides, work, shopping markets, etc.

My criteria: work stuff and packed clothes and such to be separate, so I can walk off my flight, into my client site, and not worry about showing all my clothes to everyone while I take out my laptop, without having to carry to bags. This bag accomplishes this amazingly well with a laptop pocket at the back, and two front pockets that accommodate your 'work bag' stuff

Well like several others here I have to comment and the woefully inadequate side pockets. They are 2 shallow and angled so water bottles just keep falling out. I've taken to using the side buckets and threading them through the carry handle of my flask just to keep it from falling out on the trail. I also miss the elastic loops that used to be on the front of the previous version

The weight stayed on my shoulders (unless I tightened the sternum strap enough to transfer some of it there), making it pretty uncomfortable after about five minutes of wear. I packed it with about 15 pounds of stuff. So, pretty disappointing. I bought an Osprey Fairview 40 for comparison - it’s smaller than I want and doesn’t have the same nifty design/organization like the Porter does, but it has more of a traditional Osprey hiking pack-style harness/belt system that is much more comfortable to carry when fully packed

I've used my Daylite for the past 6 months extensively - day hiking at least 5 times a month - I'm an avid explorer/hiker and photographer here in Florida. We'll start with the negatives first: Poor shoulder strap design makes the strap dig into the back of my neck - I've noticed this is one of the few packs designed like this in Osprey's line. It makes the pack hard to wear. The side mesh pockets are shallow and water bottles/Nalgenes/Platypus come tumbling out if you lean over too much - super annoying on trail
