I plan to buy my first fountain pen, mainly for school and to carry around on a day-to-day basis, I have seen that they recommend the pilot metropolitan a lot but I am concerned about its ink capacity so what would be a good fountain pen with good capacity and preferably F nibe.

Is there a nice pen under $30 for a student with cheap paper? (im plan Ing to use pelikan 4001 ink)

* Pilot Super 250 (Body Made May 22nd 1964), 14K "Falcon" (made December 1968), quarter-turn switch filler. Even though my Kashmir Doric in the link above was repaired after the barrel cracked in half, I couldn't bring myself to use it again due to fear of fragility even though the repairer reinforced the barrel with a silicone rod. So I got a Pilot Super 250 in trade, which at the time was the first I hear of the model. I've had this pen for **6 years now,** and it's a fun practical user with a semiflex-ish nib that has a good springback feeling

* Wahl 431A (1920s) ( [[URL REMOVED] Bottom one ) Had this guy for about **6 years**, and some minor scuff with the seller over the definition of "restored" (old cruddy ink left in the feed and cap, undisclosed ding, and definition of 'flex' etc etc), we'll just say I had a lot less tact back then. But this little guy, originally came with a Wahl '2' Semiflex Needlepoint, though some research suggests that with a clip and its length in a gold-filled model it was supposed to be a #3 nib (hence the 4**3**1A , 4" , #3 nib, No. 1 Pattern. A = yellow gold-filled)

 They can take a while to flush out (like a Parker 45), but they work very well. The grips also seem to be much much more durable than the similar looking slimmer Montblancs of the 1960s (Montblanc 12, 14, etc) which are prone to hairline barrel cracks.

* [Wahl-Eversharp Doric 2nd gen (1930s), Full Size]([URL REMOVED] #4 Personal Point 14K "M" "Signature" (semi-flex) , vac-filler converted to a button filler, in Jet Black. Had this for **two years** now. This has been a sort of grail for a while for me, and the celluloid on the Dorics are known to already start crazing by now, the black color however remains largely stable compared to the lighter colors. Had this one for about two years now

However, we all know that there comes a time when the shiny new thing becomes the less shiny older thing.  We tend not to share stories about them then.  I am guilty of this too.   

Does anyone else feel that it would be useful if there were reviews of pens that had been owned and used for a few year? Or, for some reason, owned and never really been used?  

I think it would be useful because the longer term review is more likely to be less biased by the excitement of the shiny new thing.  Perhaps that's just me?

Long term reviews, where are you?

Regarding vintage pens: last weekend I paid about 5 euro for a Parker 45 Flighter Deluxe with a 18 k gold nib, in really good condition. I'm telling this to demonstrate that vintage pens could be the better variant, only this variant requires more patience and a bit of luck.

I never thought I'd do this, but I'm recommending a Lamy 2000. It looks boring as hell and the writing experience is good but not great. However, it gives you the best bang for your buck in its price range, with the (possible) exceptions of Pilot Capless and the Platinum 3776. 

I’m both coming up on a milestone birthday and have recently gotten hit with horrible news, so I’ve decided to splurge on a mid-range pen.

I’ve been looking at Sailor’s 1911s for awhile, and Goulet just got in a gorgeous new model.  My question is, therefore, are they worth it? Are there other gold-nib pens I might consider?

I’m also toying with a Visconti Van Gogh because I’ve wanted a Visconti forever, but that’s a steel nib.

Thoughts?

TL;DR - looking for an all metal pen that takes **Pilot G2** refills and looks as professional and sleek as a Parker Jotter. 

My perfect ink/cartridge is Pilot G2 0.38mm. I’ve tried tons of others, fountain pens, space pens, but always come back to the G2. 

For decades, Parker pens have been my pleasure and passion. They disappeared from stores several years ago and reappeared a few weeks ago in an online ad. I ordered several, and expect to order more as part of other orders to try to keep them in reach. We are all entitled to our pleasures; Parker pens are among mine

* 37 g is too heavy, so lighter than that...or maybe the pen I'm comparing to is just poorly balanced?

  I find I have to grip skinny pens harder to hold it in place, which puts more stress on my finger muscles.  The slick gloss finish does not help grip when your fingers get a bit oily.  There are matte finish 849 that may be grippier.    

I know there's a million posts here on Caran d'Ache and the Caran d'Ache 849 in particular, so please forgive my transgression.  I have a specific question about the Caran d'Ache 849  spefically, and I'm hoping to get an very objective answer.  I know there are millions of 849 fans out there, and I understand about being a fan of a certain brand or model of writing instrument.  So, brand loyalty and bias is easy to find, but that's not what I'm hoping to get here.  I am not looking for pen recommendations with my question (I already have hundreds).  I am not looking for other Caran d'Ache models.  My question is laser-specific about the Caran d'Ache 849 pen, and only the Caran d'Ache 849 pen. Okay, there's the intro.  Now, onward to the question.

I have long been a fan of the Caran d'Ache 849.  For some reason there is something which just draws my eye to the shape of this pen.  Perhaps it is the simplicity of the 849, or maybe it's the finish, I don't know, but I sure do like them.  However, I've never owned or even written with an 849.  

I ask the following in all honesty, and hope to see all the pros and especially the cons of writing with the 849.  I'm interested in several aspects of this pen.  These are as follows:

a.) How enjoyable is the writing experience with this pen?  Specifically, if you write for long periods of time how comfortable is the pen to use overall?

b.) How well does the 849 work as an EDC pen?  How is the portability?

c.) How are the Caran d'Ache refills?  Do they write as smoothly as a Schmidt Glider (and similar)?  

d.) Lastly, are there any viable gel refill options for the 849 pen, and if so who/what are they?
