For mostly carpet you'll want a powerhead with physical height adjustment and a bagged vacuum will last longer. The Sebo Dart and Sebo Felix are great uprights that will easily last 10 years, in fact Sebo's motor warranty is 10 years. For a canister the Miele C1 Cat & Dog and Sebo K3 are good and the Miele C3 Kona and Sebo E3 are better. Empty it when it gets full, rinse the pre-motor filter at the top of the bin as specified, occasionally clean the screen inside of the bin whenever necessary, remove any tangling from the brush roll, and replace the exhaust filter when it becomes dirty and it is a great unit. Maintaining any vacuum cleaner is the key to making it last a long time.
