 It's just outstanding for the application. On the note of gaming, though, I should probably mention or caution that of the open backs I've tried, this is one of the ones that leaks the most sound. So when gaming online, I tend to hear a lot more complaints about my music leaking into the microphone if I'm not on push-to-talk or muted, so I guess that's probably something I should have brought up in the cons section, but we're here now. Base aside, I also really like the tonality of the HD800S

 And the problem with the design element is that it's quite prone to getting dents and scratches if it's not handled with care. So at least for me, it feels like every time I pick up the headphone, I gotta be very mindful about trying to avoid touching that part of the headphone and only grabbing it from the black plastic parts. The more serious problem I have with the HD800S and its current design, and this is something that I pointed out in my original review, are the connector sockets for the driver, which are really easy to break. Some might remember that I actually broke my original review unit of the HD800S because I tried removing the cables from the headphone side when the entire jack assembly came out, which of course meant that I could no longer use one of the drivers in the headphone

 And in this video, I want to share maybe some insight into what drew me to this headphone while also sharing some of the pros and cons of the HD800S so that maybe you can decide if it's a good fit for you as well. Let's start out with the cons. So I should mention that I believe that the HD800S is a very well-built headphone in terms of the materials used and the care with which it's assembled. However, there are two things about this chassis that I do find to be somewhat bothersome

 Hey everyone, it's Chrono from The Headphone Show.

 but instead I wanted to talk about one of the few headphones

 that I reviewed in the past and actually purchased,

 and I believe that I filmed the video for this headphone

 almost two years ago, so it was like in October of 2020.

 Of course, if you're interested in checking that video out,

 And in this video, I want to share maybe some insight

 while also sharing some of the pros and cons of the HD800S

 So I should mention that I believe that the HD800S

 However, there are two things about this chassis

 that I do find to be somewhat bothersome.

 The first and more minor one is the silver screen

 At a glance, it may look like it's a solid piece,

 but it's actually more of a mesh-like material.

 is that it's quite prone to getting dents and scratches

 So at least for me, it feels like every time

 The more serious problem I have with the HD800S

 and this is something that I pointed out

 are the connector sockets for the driver,

 Some might remember that I actually broke

 because I tried removing the cables from the headphone side

 which of course meant that I could no longer use

 And the problem is that the socket assembly

 isn't properly secured to the headphone,

 and when you factor in the really tight,

 So it's definitely something to keep in mind

 if you know you like swapping out cables

 and that is the poor bass performance that it delivers.

 It doesn't just have a very low bass shelf

 that rolls off towards a lower frequency,

 but the bass quality itself isn't the greatest.

 When compared to some of its other open back peers,

 the HD800S's bass just lacks a certain level

 that other headphones in this price bracket

 and even less expensive headphones like the LCD2

 those tend to have much tighter bass responses.

 with an analog bass boost or an EQ upshelf,

 it's something I don't really find myself doing

 I actually halved the bass boost I originally had

 from plus five dB to plus two and a half dB,

 and that's just because even if you boost the bass,

 But anyway, so let's now talk about the things

 because despite of its poor bass quality,

 I'm just gonna say this is my favorite open back headphone,

 and yes, this is after listening to the LCD5

 I suppose I'll begin by talking about its technical qualities,

 It simply has exceptional detour retrieval

 These were the best headphones within my price range that provided the right balance of clarity and bass. The other option was the Audeze LCD-MX4, which to me had all the benefits of the HD 820's clarity, but with marginally better soundstage and bass response and impact.

On the other end of the scale, the highs are crystal clear and sound similar to the HD800S, but without the harsh sibilance and 'shimmer' that the exhibit. The mids are not lacking, and complement the highs and lows well, but I'm not well listened enough to judge that. These were the best headphones within my price range that provided the right balance of clarity and bass. The other option was the Audeze LCD-MX4, which to me had all the benefits of the HD 820's clarity, but with marginally better soundstage and bass response and impact

A big part of the issue with the 820s is that they are too loose & don't create a good seal for a lot of people's head shapes.  If you have a chance to audition this headset, press both cups inwards, and if they sound like a totally different headphone (should sound way better than loose-fitting) than unfortunately, the seal doesn't fit your head shape.  Not sure why Sennheiser has never tried to fix the seal and fitment issue.

I was able to try out both the 800s & 820s at the San Francisco Sennheiser store for an hour each.  They are more similar than different, but for my use case, the 820s (added punch/slam & warmth at the cost of a slightly smaller soundstage) fit me better.  I use the 820s for EDM & pop genres, movies, & games.  The 820s & the 800 series soundstage (some find it unnatural) are able to expand normally compressed genres like EDM & pop to recreate a concert auditorium type sound, like a rave held in an auditorium, and is the niche reason why I like them. 

IMO, once you get to the $1k+++ headphone market, you need to try them out because at that level, pretty much all of them are more dynamic, more resolving, better soundstage, etc than most of the mid-fi tiers people are trying/curious to upgrade from.  Personal preference is a key factor. 

For me, I think my preference is not quite the norm that I see in the audiophile community (people seem to like detail a lot).  I value meaty & euphonic (getting lost in the music) sounds the most, but I like having that detail & aggression that is just under my limit.  I basically like meaty, euphonic headphones that are just under shouty & clinical but once it gets to shouty & clinical levels, I dislike it.  For me, that headphone is the LCD-X.
