We thought that 8TB of flash storage was niche and extreme enough for most prosumers and enthusiasts when we first reviewed Sabrent&rsquo;s 8TB Rocket XTRM-Q, but now the company is doubling down and pushing capacity to new limits with its 16TB model.
The new variant doubles capacity to 16TB, but it isn&rsquo;t quite as portable as the 8TB model due to its larger form factor and power requirements. While the original XTRM-Q contained one Rocket Q M.2 NVMe SSD within, the new 16TB model has two of them behind a slightly different Thunderbolt 3 bridge, providing a ton of fast flash storage and potentially bus-saturating performance for those who need it.  But I found the solution myself, and the drive works fine. Yes, can get hot, but I am not a super heavy duty user.  Attached is the speed test I did compared to my XPS15 9570 internal (Toshiba) SSD. The XTRM Q 1TB is very fast! If Sabrent had reasonable tech support, I would give 5 Stars

 Revised to three stars. I can't reasonably keep at four stars a product that I haven't been able to use the majority of the time I have owned it.  Yet another update: Replacement works, as does the second 8TB XTRM-Q I bought. Realistically, for my purposes, which require portable storage capable of handling fairly frequent multi-TB transfers, direct-to-QLC speeds are just too slow

Update: Sabrent came through

 On my 2019 Apple iMac running Blackmagicdesign Disk speed test (connect as Thunderbolt3) gave 1380 MB/s Write and 2431 MB/s Read. (My internal SSD from Apple was 1852 Writes, 2194 Reads). Yes it gets Hot if you write to it a lot (ex. recording Video to it, but running an Operating System OS from it, it's not hot)

I just received a Rocket XTRM-Q 1TB Thunderbolt3 Ext. SSD. On my 2019 Apple iMac running Blackmagicdesign Disk speed test (connect as Thunderbolt3) gave 1380 MB/s Write and 2431 MB/s Read. (My internal SSD from Apple was 1852 Writes, 2194 Reads)

When running the disk test during editing/idle mode, only scored 740 mb/s read and 450 mb/s write both when editing on fcp and when drive was just idling

Almost there, but not there yet.

 If you want to speed up an older iMac I can highly recommend this Sabrent Thunderbolt 3 SSD.
