 However, the sweet spot for price and performance likely lies somewhere in the middle with either the 4 core 1500X or the 6 core 1600. As the 1600 is likely to offer a decent performance boost at a price that's still lower than Intel's i5 lineup, I decided that this is where I would focus my testing. Now when deciding what to test against and how to test, I figured the safest bet would be to try to compare the 1600 to the closest competitor from Intel in both price and configuration. This meant the 7600K for price and the 6800K for cores and threads

 Finally, I also re-ran all benchmarks on my i7-7700K, giving us a grand total of 5 different processors being run through the gauntlet. I tried to keep the testing environments as similar as possible by using the same kit of G.Skill DDR4-2400 when I could, and in the X99 setup I used a 4x4gig kit of Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400. I was able to run the memory on all platforms at its rated speed without any issues

 Now when deciding what to test against and how to test, I figured the safest bet would be to try to compare the 1600 to the closest competitor from Intel in both price and configuration. This meant the 7600K for price and the 6800K for cores and threads. Unfortunately I don't own a 6800K, but I do own a 6900K. By disabling two of the 6900K's cores and locking the clock speed to 3

 All tests were run with a Founder's Edition GTX 1080 at stock speeds. The Z270 tests were run on a Gigabyte Z270X Gaming K7, and the X99 tests on a Gigabyte X99 Ultra Gaming. Testing the 1600 was interesting, as I seemed to have a decent amount of headroom here, much more so than with either of the Ryzen 7 chips I tested. This was a bit unfortunate, as I was expecting big things from the 1600, given its advantage in core count over the 7700K

Ryzen 5 1600 Review! - YouTube

I think I'm having issues with my CPU. Whenever I load a game, the CPU is always at 100% and it takes a long time to load. This happens in multiple games.

.. this was a quick slap-together and it will be cleaned up!  Case is a Phanteks Enthoo Luxe with a tempered glass side. Mid-range water cooling case

 The screen kept going black once the AMD driver was installed, so I had to connect a second display to play around with the settings to get the main display stable. In the AMD settings application changing the pixel format to YCbCr 4:2:0 solved the problem.  With Samsung 970 EVO storage, this thing boots FAST! Not as fast as a coreboot rig, but really fast for such a bloated BIOS.  Passmark scores attached

 Alright, time for some overclocking! Today my friends I'm overclocking the new AMD Ryzen 5 1600 CPU to 4 GHz and what most of you probably wanna know is, are there any improvements in frame rates when it comes to gaming and of course the required CPU voltage. Just like in my main review of this Ryzen 1600 I'm going to use the Asus Prime X370 Pro motherboard, a board featuring the X370 chipset and a 10 phase VRM power design while not being all that expensive. But you of course don't necessarily need an X370 board to overclock, the B350 chipset supports it too. Now as always I can't repeat myself often enough, just because my specific chip achieves a certain overclock doesn't mean yours has too

 So without further ado, any FPS improvements in games at a higher clock speed? What about Ryzen's rendering power? Let's find out I guess. Okay. The the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the

 But you of course don't necessarily need an X370 board to overclock, the B350 chipset supports it too. After all it's all about the silicon lottery and every single CPU is different in that regard. The quality proves cheap when trying to install, but it works still.

 First up is Battlefield 1 running off DirectX 11. You can see marginal differences between the 3 chips with the 6700K taking a slight lead. When we move over to DirectX 12, things change. Both the Ryzen CPUs take the lead, which certainly points to the API doing great for Ryzen and more cores, though the difference between Ryzen and Intel in this is minute to say the least

 So let's go over it. First of course is their test platform. The motherboard used was the MSI X370 X-Power Gaming Titanium. They also used 3600 RAM, but had it running at 2400 because they couldn't get any higher with the motherboard

 When we move over to DirectX 12, things change. Both the Ryzen CPUs take the lead, which certainly points to the API doing great for Ryzen and more cores, though the difference between Ryzen and Intel in this is minute to say the least. Next we have Doom running on OpenGL, and it's our first strange result. Why is the 1600 doing better than the 1700X? It seems to boil down to one thing, better optimization

 The 1600 benchmarks were done more recently, so optimization has been done in between testing the games with the two chips, as there's simply no reason the 1600 would do better. Next is Doom with the API Vulcan, and not surprisingly, both Ryzen CPUs perform very well. The two not being different in performance of course shows 8 cores and 16 threads just aren't being used right now. Next up we have the newest Metro game, and it had the i7 beating out Ryzen by a few FPS while the 1600 and 1700X are tied

this CPU replaced my rather old i5 2500. i paired it with an MSi Krait Gaming MOBO. the great value of the unit is impossible to ignore, even tho i don't have one of the faster ones. if you're a gamer, and you CAN'T STAND IT when micro-stutter creeps in, you'll find having 6 cores makes games so silky smooth that you'll forget dropped frames is a thing

7GHz on all 6 cores at 1.325V. AIDA64 indicated it uses 95 watts at that overclock, which is all the included Wraith Spire cooler is rated for. recently, i changed out the stock cooler with a Cooler Master Hyper 612 Ver

 There are reports of some chips going higher, but I think the sort of realistic overclock you can hope to achieve would be 4GHz with that particular part. So, the 1600 AF is not only cheaper than the original 1600 and faster out of the box, but it should also overclock a bit better as well. At the very least, your chances of hitting or exceeding 4GHz are greatly improved. As for power consumption, it's in line with what we've seen from the 2600, just a little bit better out of the box due to slightly decreased clock speeds, but this can vary depending on silicon quality

 For budget builders with access to the 1600 AF at $85 US, there is simply no better choice. As I said earlier, the R5 2600 was already amazing value at $120 US, so the 1600 AF, which is basically the same CPU for a further $35 off, is just an insane deal. Has to be said, AMD really is putting the hurt on Intel with these parts. At least, you know, lower end CPUs, your Core i5s are lower, because right now, something like the Core i5-9600K, that costs $240 US, and then the locked Core i5-9400F, that comes in at $165, and I expect both these 6-core, 6-threaded processors to actually end up being slower than the 1600 AF for gaming within a few years from now
