Unless it's for very specific games where those specific games gain a huge fps increase from 5000 series Ryzen, keep your 9900k and wait for next gen of intel/ryzen and see how those end up, you likely won't see much, if any, increase in FPS at 1440p going from a 9900k to a 5950x.

Thinking about switching over to AMD

 Games refused to open and performance went downhill with each restart compared my ryzen 9 3900. Looked on reddit for a bit and ran into someone with the same issue. Unexplained instability and constant crashing. Unistalled ASUS armory crate and accessories and disabled in bios

9 GHz and a 19% IPC improvement thanks to a new design that sees the core complexes expanded to 8 cores with a new 32MB L3 cache topology. And all of this has been achieved using the same old TSMC 7nm process. There are quite a number of architectural improvements here, but rather than go over all of that I'm just going to jump right into what I suspect many of you are really here for, the benchmarks. So with that let's go over the test conditions and then we'll jump into all the glorious blue bar graphs

The highlights include boost clocks of up to 4.9 GHz and a 19% IPC improvement thanks to a new design that sees the core complexes expanded to 8 cores with a new 32MB L3 cache topology.  Now back to the 5950X, as you'd expect this is a 3950X replacement and as such it packs 16 cores with SMT support meaning it has 32 threads. The MSRP has been increased a bit from $750 US up to $800 US, so it is quite an expensive CPU for the mainstream AM4 platform.   Cons: You really do need an upgraded cooler for this CPU. I was using the Wraith-Prism cooler and it was routinely getting up into the high 80's. The price is also hard to swallow, with the money I got back from my return I was able to get a CPU, motherboard, and power supply. Intel is being very aggressive right now with their pricing, and the i9-12900k is $550, and that out-performs the AMD in almost everything

I bought this hoping that it would improve my framerates in Destiny 2. I knew that D2 likes Intel more than AMD, but the latest reviews were showing this CPU as outperforming Intel i9's in almost all games tested, so I figured it'd help out. Making sure that my GPU wasn't the bottle neck, I turned down all of my settings and was getting 80-95 fps in most areas, that's the same performance I was getting with my previous CPU.  I ended up returning the 5950x and bought an Intel i7-11700k, I'm now getting 120-150 fps in the same areas with the same settings

Overkill for some things, not enough power for others

 With that in mind, the Blenchmark run-through our test computer's 2070 Super graphics card completed in 19 minutes and 19 seconds, about 2 minutes faster than the 5950X. And switching over to Nvidia's proprietary Optix rendering mode, it only took about 8 minutes. The 2070 Super is not a budget card, it launched about a year ago for $499, but today that'd get you the much faster RTX 3070. You could add in the 6-core 5600X for the same total price as the 5950X, and you'd outpace it in a lot of applications that support GPU acceleration

How good is AMD's Ryzen 9 5950X for content creators?

9ghz.  So far using freon cooling and 16 fans I'm not able to reach anything beyond 4700mhz and stable at 4600mhz using asus x570 strix.  I'm not sure why I would need 4.9ghz but if the figure is written I expect that it should be achievable!!!  On 4k and 8k video editing I noticed 30-40% performance improvement while rendering yet processor kept running below 50% and lower then 50c

  My monitor is oddessey G9, which is 8mp monitor @244hz.  My previous processor is in 9900k and I wasn't able to go above 120fps even when lowering tbe resolution @5.2ghz.  Now without changing anything except the processor and mobo, my fps jumped to 140hz

The only thing you need to keep in mind is that CPUs like the 5900X and the 5950X were launched with limited availability than the 5600X and the 5800X. With that being said, today I wanted to focus on this guy, the Ryzen 9 5950X. This processor deserves its own dedicated video because it resides in a class of its own

 It really looks like the developers are some of the few who are taking advantage of all the cores and clocks in current gen CPUs. Power consumption is another one of Zen 3's strengths since AMD has been able to achieve what seemed like something impossible. They've given it a massive generational performance increase, higher sustained clock speeds, better lightly threaded performance, and literally the same power envelope, all without changing to a new manufacturing process or sacrificing in any other areas. It's pretty incredible guys

The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is a beast in our benchmark and gaming performance results but its price is also quite high vs. the Ryzen 9 3950X and Ryzen 9 5900X.  But there are situations where the Ryzen 9 5950X is worth it, especially vs. the Intel i9-10900K and i9-10980XE for productivity and rendering.   But with the 5950X availability problems, is it better to get the 5900X, 5800X or even 5600X for some situations?  But that shouldn't stop it from being at the top of which CPU is the best for gaming, rendering and video editing.
