They kinda did with the 2nd gen SE. it may not be a mainline numbered iPhone, but it’s the most modern iPhone with Touch ID and it works pretty good for my mom who would never get used to Face ID. Also, I vastly prefer Touch ID, especially after covid happened and I had to constantly pull my mask down to use Apple Pay.

And it shows, with benchmarks putting the 2020 SE leagues above the iPhone 8 and absolutely crushing the OnePlus Nord N10..It's nippy to use, and powerful enough to handle anything you'd likely throw at it, including most, if not all, of the biggest games to be found in the App Store

So far my SE has been fine for almost 4 years and it looks like there's a good chance of making it another year. When it dies or Apple stops support I'll just get the next SE. Or next year's Mini if there is one, since I can probably justify the extra cost considering how long it will likely last.
