Moving from an iPhone XR the speed of charging is on another level. I can get the it to 80-85% in no time at all. Overall experience!? Very good and loving it - i got the Google case as well in grey, very good quality.

 I started to wonder if they even inspected the phone at all because they claim to clean their phone’s thoroughly so if they didn’t even notice that, and then I went to turn the phone on, the battery was already completely dead which is already a bad sign because you’re expecting a “renewed” phone to have all new parts meaning it should have been almost fully charged … so if the replacement phones battery was completely drained, how would they have looked at it to even inspect it unless something was wrong with the battery that caused the phone to drain while it was shut off but then that circles back to the inspectors again and them not properly doing their job. if the battery was faulty, they should have caught it and fixed the issue before sending it out… once the phone got a charge, I did notice that I wasn’t getting any alerts about the battery being in-authentic like the first phone did so I believe the 2nd phone still has all its original parts but then it shouldn’t be considered renewed… the phone also took a really long time to charge and as I mentioned, the sound quality was horrid.  I just hate this cat and mouse game of having to send phones back and forth and having to reset them and transfer all my date over and over again so I just decided to suck it up and keep the first iPhone I got and pray it works out because I’ve read stories of Apple locking users out of their phones if it’s believed their phones have in-authentic parts including batteries. I’ll try to remember to give anyone who wants to know, an update in a month or so

Everything on the outside seems perfect despite some slight scuffs along the edges of the phone that a phone case easily covers and micro scratches on the screen that you don’t see unless the screens off and you hold it up at different angles. My main concern has to do with the battery Amazon had installed into the phone, as soon as I set my phone up, I got an alert claiming the batter may be in-authentic and in-turn, will affect my phones full capabilities. The only reason I’m being generous on my rating is because I think the issue has more to do with Amazon than the seller. Amazon is sending me a new phone and I’ll be updating my review as soon as I get the new one in the mail about 12-15 days

Actually, as someone who only recently entered the Pixel line and stock Android 11, I think you entered at around the right time. Even as recent as Android 8/9 back in 2018, stock Android had nowhere near the amount of polish and nifty little tricks that this current iteration has.

When I saw an article about the 5a release, it was the first time in a LONG TIME that I got excited about a phone! I've been so bored with iOS for so long, and this was just what I needed to get me hyped about a handset! I pre-ordered the 5a and the a-series buds right then, and signed up for Google Fi as well! I went all in on Google and have been blown away so far. The buds function amazingly, the handset  makes my iphone XR feel slow, and Fi seems to work just fine. 

Granted, it has only been a few days of ownership, but with android 12 coming, I have no doubt I'll be rocking this phone for a while!

I'd say, if you don't mind minor bugs and perhaps have a backup phone (your iphone 8?) to run banking apps, just in case, try out 12 beta. It feels quite fresh even on my dated Pixel 3. 

The downside is that with the latest beta (4.1), quite a few reported power consumption when idled is quite high (mine dropped 14% point over night). Hopefully, this will go away once the GA version is out.

My foray into Android last year was a very similar experience at first. "Holy shit this is great, not at all like the clunky stuff I used years ago!"

Overall either ecosystem is now quite polished and there's probably very few things I would definitely recommend either Android or iOS for -- at least for like 95% of all users. 

The devil's in the detail and while people on Reddit usually report on their switch (in either direction!) when it's all fresh and great, I'd be so much more curious to know how things are going when the immediate excitement has worn off. 

Personally I found Android super and I still miss my Pixel 5 in some respects, but the small daily annoyances based on learned user preference developed over years of iPhone usage and some general issues I just couldn't resolve in a way I wanted to finally did it for me and I went out and bought an iPhone again. 

Just to be clear, this reflects more on me than on Android or the hardware, but I don't think I'm too much of an outlier either. After all, once the honeymoon phase is over, you realise it's just a phone that now does things differently.

Anyway, congrats on your new phone and I hope it all works out for you!

Ugh, just got my 5a and I'm having issues. My screen colors are just off. They look too yellowy or green. Plus I tried turning off adaptive brightness, but it keeps doing it anyway. And also (!), the security patch won't update and is stuck on the June update.

All very very annoying. I guess I'm going to try a factory reset (DEEPLY annoying since I've spent the past day setting up all my accounts), and I'll see if that fixes things, otherwise I'm returning the phone.

This kind of bullshit shouldn't happen. Seems like there's just no quality control at Google. I honestly don't know what phone I'll be getting instead. Ughhghhhh.

Also RCS is a big deal. For whatever reason iPhone refused to adapt this but Android to Android you can send huge files without any compression. Make sure you enable that and your message features.

Thanks for your thoughts on the 5a. I've been thinking about it to replace my old Pixel 2XL, which is still in perfect shape except the battery is not as good... but that isn't really a problem for me these days.

I keep reading that the 5 is either not available or discontinued. Just for grins, I tried going through the order process, and made it to getting it into my cart, but didn't finish the order. I may wait to see how much the new ones will go for, and then possibly get the 5a if they're too high. I don't need anything really faster, and in fact my 2XL is still OK except for no updates.

I've had a 2, 4a (smashed it in a treadmill), now a 4a 5G. Also have an iPhone 8 for work and see no reason to switch back to iPhone for personal use until it blows my mind.

The last iPhone I used was the 4s.  I first tried Android on an HTC Desire and then after going back to the iPhone 4 I then tried a Samsung Galaxy S4.  Both were disappointing.  The bloat made the OS horrible.  I hated Android. 
 After a brief stint on a Windows Phone, I needed an Android device to manage casting to the newly released Chromecast so I picked up a Nexus 7 tablet.  I loved stock Android.  The Nexus was minimalist and fast, just what I was after.  I promptly sold my Windows Phone and got a Nexus 5.  I've been using these ever since and can't see me ever going to the iPhone again.

Glad your enjoying it! Just a point of emphasis to remember. Default apps are not always the best apps. Explore the Android ecosystem and what it has to offer and you can really maximize your experience.

Wow wow wow! My last Android phone was the Note 4 and I believe it was running Kit Kat. I made the switch to iPhone and have had them for the past five years. My last one being the 8 plus that I bought at launch. I chose it over the X because it had Touch ID which I had grown accustomed to for tasks like using Apple Pay at the store.  

I kept holding off on upgrading because of the lack of a fingerprint reader. Wearing face masks has made Face ID frustrating for many and I refused to upgrade until touch ID made it's return. After reading that it would not come back for the 13 I decided I just couldn't wait any longer.

Seeing the Pixel 5 and 4a were sold out, it seemed very likely the 5A launch was imminent and I bought it immediately when it was announced. I have to say that I could not be more pleased. I thought it was pretty slick that they give me an OTG dongle and I could transfer everything over from iOS no problem. Android has really improved too. There is just so much to love. So many little things that make life easier. And did I mention the camera? Holy moly it is great, especially in low light! There is even a Google podcast app (used to have to use podkicker). And an app just like Notes on iOS (keep notes)! 

Gotta say, I am a huge fan now. I only wish I would have made the jump long ago! I guess it is a great time to switch too because Android 12 looks insane. 

P.S. - I got the Pixel Buds Series A since they were $40 off when I bought the phone and I must say they are excellent! I had Airpods and these are just as good for less than half the price. A steal!

Your second pro are built into android, it's called fast pair, as long as the headphones have the hardware for it it'll work on any android 10+ device.

I am pretty sure Samsung use their own solution, but pixel, Sony, OnePlus, Bose and some more uses fast pair on their headphones.

I use both a Pixel 4 and an iPhone 13 Mini, and I think your observations are right on. They both have their strengths, and the fact is that if you are wedded to the Google ecosystem (mail, contacts, Voice, calendar, Home, Assistant), nothing is more seamless than a Pixel. Of course, if you are in Apple’s system (like owning an Apple Watch) the same can be true there.

As a former Moto X user, if you haven’t tried the 12 or 13 Mini, you really should. I pick it up and I feel like I’ve come home.

Just got an iphone 13 to replace my pixel 2 and this is mostly all relatable to how i feel. Gboard sucks so much that i just went back to the stock keyboard. The swipe typing is on par with gboard anyway. The gestures to edit typing are very different, holding somewhere to move cursor vs just tapping etc., no deal breaker its just a bit to get used to. The lack of universal back gesture is so far my biggest annoyance, but the reachability thing helps deal with needing to go to the top of the screen every damn time. I dont regret the upgrade, definitely needed one anyway.

True - but I'm super unimpressed with what Google has been doing with Google Photos.  I used to be able to sync Google Photos to my server so I always had a backup that was created by a native app - but since Google got rid of that functionality (thanks to diverging Photos and Drive), I've been having to run a 3rd party app.

Using Apple's ecosystem, it can auto-backup to iCloud then use the API to pull the full quality photos and delete them (if desired, anyway).

True - and I really miss the persistant "pause" button at the bottom of the screen in AA when media is playing.  CarPlay is rock solid though.  I have 2 cars that use AA/CarPlay and just got back from a trip with a rental.  AA regularly would drop audio or crash on me (multiple phones, multiple cars), but CarPlay hasn't crashed once for me yet.

One thing that is a game-changer for me:  If you use a 3rd party password manager, it can be fully integrated into the OS's username/password auto fill.  It works so damn well.  I can't tell you how amazing it's been moving from Android where it **should** be fully integrated, but ended up having to copy/paste the user/pass a third of the time.  I have only had to manually copy the password once in iOS, and that was because the App had a different domain associated with it than their website.  I picked my Pixel 4a back up last week and....ouch, it's really painful going back to the Android way of doing things.

It does most of what I want it to do, remembers emails after a few characters, has good emoji menus, etc. (As sad as it makes me, google apps in general tend to suck on ios, Google seems to not care about their apps on ios) and ios seems to "learn" your keyboard usages, once you switch keyboards enough it stays, dumb I know.

-	ios 15 has some good improvements to how notifications are handled and includes focus mode, though it is still second to how it is handled in Android.

I am a faithful Android user, having gone through the original G1, HTC Sensation, the Nexus 4, the Moto X, the OG Pixel, and most recently the Pixel 3. I briefly used an iPhone 6 when my OG Pixel suddenly stopped charging and my younger brother was gracious enough to let me borrow an extra phone he had for a couple weeks. At the time, iOS was significantly different and as a user who loved the customization Android affords, I hated the iPhone without question. 

This time, I took my Pixel 3 rafting without a proper waterproof cover and drowned the phone. I tried taking it to UBreakIFix and while super friendly, they were unable to bring the phone back to fully functional. So I have temporarily switched to my wife's old iPhone X running iOS 14.5 and I have honestly learned a lot from my time using it over the past month. My disclaimer is I'm not a power Apple user and so some of my issues I describe below might have workarounds that I was too lazy to research so forgive me for those, and because it's such an old device I'm not commenting on hardware including the camera (though I'd guess most people recognize Apples hardware itself is gorgeously constructed overall). Nonetheless, I thought as fellow dedicated Android users, you might be interested in what I've learned -

Pros:

1)  FaceID is way better than I could have ever imagined. Holy shit it's fucking legit. Even in low light, it's pretty impressive, and even on a 4 year old device the speed is impressive. The major oversight here is with the pandemic FaceID becomes useless in public spaces and you have to pull down your mask and click "try FaceID again" which is mildly annoying
2) Powerbeats Pro pairing with the iPhone is just gorgeous in its simplicity and speed. My issues with my Powerbeats connecting to my phone disappeared with the iPhone. I recognize this is an unfair comparison due to the special chip for compatibility between the devices. I've seen videos of how smooth this pairing is but goddamn. I think Pixel buds and Samsung buds do the same with their respective devices though the Beats have better audio quality (hence why I own the Beats)
3) After sharing a screenshot Apple gives you the option to delete that screenshot. that's awesome and over time I loved how smooth the process of taking, editing, sharing, and deleting the screenshots are.
4) Its annoying that all audio and video calls from the device are listed in on section (see #17 below) but at the same time it's kind of amazing that all your app calls and videos are easily accessible in one place which makes redialing through that app (such as Duo) really easy which is pretty damn cool.
5) I like the three beeps that lets you know a call is disconnected.
6) The "Ask App Not To Track" prompt is incredible. There's really nothing on Android (yet?) that comes close to the simplicity of this prompt. And reaaaaally opened my eyes on how many of the apps I use are thirsty for data on my use. And I loved that the iPhone would verify that I'm okay with an app accessing my location in the background if the app was constantly grabbing my location.

Cons:

1) the widgets are cool but are years behind for the most part though 'Stack' is actually legit 
2) setting up your home screen is way more work intensive than Android and not nearly as pretty nor customizable and if you want to put an app in a specific section of the screen, you have to plan how you will get it there.
3) there's no easy or straightforward way to restore your WhatsApp chats across platforms - this is less an iPhone deficit than a WhatsApp deficit but the fact the WhatsApp app on iPhone can't access your WhatsApp data directly from Google Drive is a major oversight. I imagine I'll face the same issue (reversed) once I get the Pixel 6. There are third party solutions but probably defeats the whole "end to end encryption" function that is an essential WhatsApp selling point
4) contact syncing is annoying and even multiple hours after setup my texts were showing up as from different people's phone numbers instead of their names - this resolved after about 24 hours but the iOS migration app developed by Apple did a weird thing where all my previous group chats became separate threads including my number so when I sent a message on the same thread from iPhone, I would receive the message I just sent. So I ended up having to recreate all my group chats again. Super annoying.
5) why isn't there a way to make Google Assistant default (instead of Siri?) If this existed I'd be hard pressed to find a complete Android trump over iPhone. But you've gotta open the assistant app. You can't make the Google search widget trump the iOS search bar and the Google search bar doesn't have app access like it does in Android which also is annoying
6) This is Google's fault more than iPhones but it's a disadvantage to a user completely baked into the Google ecosystem: the fragmentation of reminders across Calendar and Assistant is a huge issue making Google Reminders way way way less useful on iPhone than Android. I imagine the workaround would be using Apple Reminders which I'm sure would work great but I have a Google Home so then I'd have even more fragmentation
7) the lack of screenshot copy:paste is a bummer and selecting text is way more annoying (what the fuck why is it so annoying?), and pasting text is similarly difficult, to the point of making copy/pasting a huge chore. And I love sharing information I've copied! So this sucks hard.
8) the way the keyboard works sucks and somehow typing is less accurate which makes no sense since I'm still using Gboard. And the keyboard will randomly switch back to the iPhone keyboard. Which is also so annoying.

19) Chrome is my default browser. Why does the iPhone keep opening Safari? This is a very small frustration but still frustrating
20) Why does Yelp only use Apple Maps? That's super annoying. This seems like SUCH an easy fix but alas, in some ways it makes sense Apple wants reign over some items

TL;DR: iOS 14.5 has a lot to offer overall, but power Android users and/or Android users baked into the Google ecosystem will have a tough time completely smoothly using an iPhone. This is not exactly shocking information but maybe the software details I listed above will be helpful or useful to anyone who finds the Apple hardware incredibly compelling.

13) Just showing all emoji colors when searching for emojis instead of long pressing to pick the emoji of your choice is also stupid
14) Lack of Bitmoji integration into Gboard is also sad
15) Because of the lack of proper access to file organization for the Google Photos app, the app is much messier on the iPhone and pulls all pictures from the device into the app which is super annoying, there&#39;s definitely a workaround for this but then you can&#39;t see those pictures at all. This really blows. If you were a dedicated Apple user this would be a non issue as you&#39;d use Apple Photos so I will note this is more of a problem for people dedicated to Google Photos
16) Why can&#39;t you click in the middle of words to fix your typing? That is some seriously dumb shit
17) Why does the iPhone default to include all FaceTime calls with phone calls in the same section? And if you press the contact it would be wonderful to verify that you want to video before dialing the way Android does.
18) The lack of a back gesture is so painful. As someone with a small hand, it&#39;s so much harder to reach for the top of the screen to go back to the previous screen/app
19) Chrome is my default browser. Why does the iPhone keep opening Safari? This is a very small frustration but still frustrating
20) Why does Yelp only use Apple Maps? That&#39;s super annoying. This seems like SUCH an easy fix but alas, in some ways it makes sense Apple wants reign over some items
21) Spotify in CarPlay does not work nearly as smoothly as Apple Music does for my wife. Not sure if this is a software limitation or a device limitation though.</p>

<p>TL;DR: iOS 14.5 has a lot to offer overall, but power Android users and/or Android users baked into the Google ecosystem will have a tough time completely smoothly using an iPhone. This is not exactly shocking information but maybe the software details I listed above will be helpful or useful to anyone who finds the Apple hardware incredibly compelling.</p>
