 It's suitable for anybody looking for a really warm yet breathable jacket, either wearing it as a standalone outer or as part of a layering system with really warm mid-layer and cold conditions. So, what's it made from? The outside is made from Arc'teryx's Fortius Air 20 fabric. Fortius is Arc'teryx's soft shell fabric, they use that across a couple of different ranges. The Air is standing for the fact that it's air permeable and the 20 is the face fabric, the denier of the face fabric

 I fit kind of in between a medium and a large, I would go for a large in this. The medium for me, just a little bit trim around the chest. I still get good kind of moveability, it's not getting restricted at all, but it just means it's a bit trim, it would kind of limit me to how many layers I could wear with it. As a kind of a general rule for Octo X, they come in a couple of different fits, this is from their trim fit block, think streamlined, no extra faff, no extra bits flapping in the wind

Generally for me, I know that if I wear a trim fit piece of Octo X, I'm going to be looking at a large, some of their regular fit items I know I wear a medium, that kind of gives you an idea of how it sits. One of the big things is a comparison for this, the centre back length, kind of down the bottom here, that's 75 centimetres, so if you think about one of the workhorse pieces from Octo X's range, the Atom LT, it's about a centimetre longer than that

 The chest pocket right here is very similar, it has the overlapping design, and the zipper is actually on the outer layer, which is interesting. And this guy is made of a whole different material right here, pretty stretchy. I think it's a similar material to the cuffs, but a little bit more rough. And this guy fits, it is essentially, it is this whole area right here is the pocket

 And that's something I like a lot about my other Patagonia Nano Air is that they're super small so they're not going to get too dirty and they still wrap nicely around your wrists. So moving up to the hood, we have a little tightening strap right here, which I've already explained why I like that guy so much. And inside you have the tag. The material on the inside is really, really soft, feels pretty durable, and super warm

Our pockets on the side are slightly overlaid so you can't really see the zipper, which I love, keeping wind and rain out of your pockets.  If you're static, you're probably not going to want to have this jacket be standalone in temperatures less than 13 to 15 degrees Celsius if you're just standing still, and if you combine it with a fleece, then maybe 5 to 10 static temperature. So another thing I'd like to touch on is price of the jacket. This thing is almost $300, which is, I think, way too much money to justify spending on a mid-layer. However, after owning it for four months now, I am never ever going to have another mid-layer besides this guy right here

 Added up, we think the Arc’teryx is the better-built piece and worth the added $70 investment. One of the most popular synthetics on the market is Arc’teryx’s own Atom LT Hoody, which has the same listed weight of 13.2 ounces but runs noticeably warmer since it lacks the air-permeable lining and shell of the Proton LT. It’s interesting from a construction standpoint: the Atom LT uses less insulation (60g Coreloft Compact) and has a similar 20-denier shell, but that permeability makes a big difference in terms of overall protection

 Compared to the Proton, the First Light Stretch uses 60-gram PrimaLoft Silver Active, is heavier at 16.8 ounces, and we found its outer shell to be less impervious to heavy rain and snow (it wet out fairly quickly in sustained rain, although the jacket still kept us warm and sealed out wind). Both are highly mobile, backcountry-ready synthetics, but the First Light’s added heft does translate to less packability for stowing in a pack. All in all, we think the Proton is the better all-around midlayer, and especially in rough weather

A size medium weighs 13.2 ounces, which is about average for a jacket of this type. It’s certainly not the lightest insulation available, but it’s more durable and warmer than an ultralight puffy.

The hood fits great when you’re wearing a helmet, but at all other times, it’s a bit big. There’s a cinch cord so you can adjust the fit, but overall it could be smaller.

They’re much easier to layer than an all-in-one synthetic-insulated hoodie and you can usually find reasonably priced ones with the required features
