Refurbished Pioneer PL-51 paired with Edifer 1700BTS. Sound is very quiet….time for a pre-amp? What should I get?

The speakers are the weak link in that system without question, so if the speakers have to stay, save your money until that situation changes.

If you truly must be parted from some of your money… get an ART DJ Pre II.

Your power needs are determined by the speakers’ **sensitivity** along with your listening distance—not their published power rating (which is just a very rough guideline to help you not accidentally blow up your speakers). Your amp doesn’t supply 75 watts unless your volume knob is absolutely pegged to max.

Also, doubling your wattage—as in increasing your wattage by 75 watts—only produces a 3dB difference, which is right on the edge of what we can even perceive. A *5 watt* difference would be absolutely 100% imperceptible.

I agree with the bulk of opinions related to the speakers.  To me, your music tastes describe someone who would do really well with a set of used Monitor Audio Bronze 2.  Lots of bass for rock, front ported, and excellent clarity on the too end.

However, do not overlook the power.  My first "real" receiver was a Harmon Kardon that replaced a Kenwood.  With its big high current power supply, it delivered clean, powerful, distortion-free  music.

Or for S&G, if you come across a vintage receiver, it may be worth a listen, just to see how your ears like it.  Not only do most have tone controls and a loudness button, most have very sweet-sounding built in phono stages.

And although the m97xe was not my cup of tea, you'd have to spend some solid cash ($100-200) just to equal it.

What would be the next upgrade you would do? The speakers are staying. I could go with an external phono preamp instead of the one built in to the record player, upgrade the needle, or possibly upgrade the receiver? It is only rated at 75W per channel and I know the speakers are at 80W.

Next Steps to Increase Record Player Sound Quality?

 For the price, though, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find a better phono preamp, though!

 I use the 100 (picofarads?) Setting, which illuminates the switches' amber light -- I kind of wish it was the other way around so the light was off at 100. Getting out the electrical tape again! At least it's not nearly as see-from-space-bright as the blue "on" light. For the price, though, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find a better phono preamp, though!

 I am very satisfied with the DJ preamp. It is easy to use, and I have had no noise introduced that some others have complained about, so I have not had to use the ground at all. I'm looking forward to plugging this up to my stereo and just listening to all my old albums. You can't beat the price, either

 I was quickly able to do an input check and monitor the recording level, and within minutes, I was recording my vinyl onto a CDR. I later imported the CDR to my computer using Rhapsody and I have to say, it sounds like I am listening to vinyl right out of my computer. I am very satisfied with the DJ preamp. It is easy to use, and I have had no noise introduced that some others have complained about, so I have not had to use the ground at all
