It is just barely three stars IF the material did not appear to be made from 'reclaimed cotton', it would be four stars. The term 'reclaimed cotton' means shredded cotton rags added to the virgin cotton to eek it out before it is spun, this results in slubby, far less rugged cotton (you don't see it until you hold it up to the light).  I bought these on the recommendation of another reviewer here on Amazon, as he seemed to understand that MOST of the 'flour sacking' offered is real junk. These will do, but it is STILL not flour sacking as I remember it, and I have a good memory for fabric, as I both sew and weave

These dish towels are large, and they may HAVE been 28 x 28 when I got them, but I failed to measure them because that was of secondary importance to me. I took a look at the fabric through a light and they appeared thin but I felt if I could get them to shrink a bit, they would stiffen up and be usable for my purpose (puddings)

5" (after hemming) is plenty to show off the holiday fabric. It's usable but also a display item. I had to rip out all of the hems, cut the towels STRAIGHT and re-hem. Not a huge deal, but it added time and effort which I wasn't expecting

 For a modern look I typically cut them in half 14x27 before hemming so they hang on the stove handle flat and straight. 13.5" (after hemming) is plenty to show off the holiday fabric. It's usable but also a display item

UPDATE: After washing, the unpleasant odor was gone, and the towels weren't quite as dingy. However, they still weren't really a true white, and I also noticed these towels have a rougher texture and are thinner than those I've bought before. They'll still be usable, but the quality definitely isn't what I've come to expect from Aunt Martha's flour sack dish towels

 It's unfortunate that Joann Fabric and Crafts (where I first started buying them) no longer sells the 33" X 38" size. If they did, I just pay the higher price for the higher quality.

. just since I ordered them! They were a good deal before, but you just priced yourselves out of my business! Lower the price back down and you'll win it back!  I'm still giving these towels a 4-star review since they are the best flour sack towels I have found. Which makes the price change even more disappointing.

Normally I love these towels... normally!

  Really these are very high quaility towels and could be used for a nurmous projects and crafts. There not just great for drying. Pinterest has a lot of great ideas and these would be the towels you would want for those projects.  As someone who always likes reading reviews before making any online purchases, I just want to do my part by giving my personal experience and opinions on products in order to help you make a more informed purchase

Wanted some kitchen towels that would be easier to use and nicer on the hands than the stained rags I was using.  Admittedly they don't absorb as much as say a bathroom washcloth, but they are smooth and don't leave lint on glass. They are big, I cut them in half and hemmed to make them a suitable size for my kitchen (I hang them off cabinet handles)  They absorb quickly, feel smooth and pleasant on the hand, and the original stitching hasn't come out in the wash, like some kitchen towels I got in big box stores like Target. Don't underestimate how big they are, get a ruler out and consider how huge they are
