Hello guys!

So myself and a couple of neighbours in my building would like to setup a projector outside for the summer times to do some movie nights for our building but I've been a bit overwhelmed in the choices available on the market so I'm not quite sure what to get hahah.

The way we'd like to setup is that we have a very large cement floor over our parking spot right now that is pretty much unused so we'll buy some outdoor furniture and setup a projector there, we would then setup a pull-down screen on the balcony a floor over.

The screen maximum size would be 162"x 108" (so 162" x 91" for proper ratio) and the projector would be roughly 20 to 30' away on the lower level. We're not looking at like 4K 3D hyper quality but something that would give us 1080p would be pretty awesome! The place is completely dark at night once everyone close their light so I'm not too worried about that part! Of course, I'm not sure if it's relevant to mention, but the projector would obviously not be kept there at all time and would only be taken out for those movie night. 

I have some friends working for IT resellers that could provide the projectors at close to cost but, I've got not clue where to start looking, so hopefully you guys can assist us in making this thing happen haha! =) Any advices from people who did something similar are welcome of course!

Looking for a projector for an outdoor movie night setup!

Before buying the non i version read this...

Looks bright and beautiful but....

Amongst my research, I found there are actually quite a few specifications that a buyer should look for in a projector, in order to choose one that will work for what they are looking to use it for.

I personally need one that is compatible with Netflix…. I know you can play Netflix (on most projectors) if you have a Firestick connected, but there *has* to be a few out there that will just play Netflix without having to fuss with purchasing a separate Firestick? 

Bluetooth/Wifi connectivity, has to be compatible with iPhone/iOS

Has to be short-throw (minimum distance 4-5 feet)

4k compatibility 

Not sure which specification controls this… (lumens?) but I pretty much need to be able to use it in dim light/ not only a pitch dark room, so if it has brightness controllability that would be 👍🏼 

Decent built-in (Bluetooth) speaker but I will ultimately purchase better speakers to connect to it


So, based off of the above “requirements”- does anyone have any good recommendations?  
Are there any other factors I should look for when I am shopping for a projector?

Great projector with some caveats....

I'm looking for a projector that I can mirror my iPhone/Macbook/PC to. I know I could get a regular projector and hook up an Apple TV or other to it. But I prefer have fewer devices to attach and would rather spend that extra $150 on a better projector. Other specs, I want a relatively high lumens and 1080p native resolution. 4k support will be a plus as I want to use it for more than 3-5 years and I would like to pay extra bucks for that.

The models that I've looked at are BenQ TH685i (seems supporting Airplay/streaming), BenQ TH585 + apple TV, Optoma HD 146X + apple TV. For airplay support device, I only heard of apple TV - I am open to non-appleTV solutions.

BenQ TH685i has all that I need but it is $300 more expensive. I would appreciate some help on making the decision. Thanks!

I wanted someting with a little bit more lumens so I don't need to play the movies in complete darkness, even tho I am mostly a relativly dedicated viewer, but sometimes I prefer a little light, and sometimes I just browse my desktop computer via my projector and then also have a little light coming in from a window, and also my walls are white, so yes, little bit more lumens then the BenQ W1090 would be really prefered.

At first I bought an relatively cheap Epson, maybe it was the Epson EB-FH06 but I can not say for sure anymore, and I did not like the picture / the contrast / everything looked washed out. I returned it immediately.

Then I bought an BenQ TK850i and I loved everything on this beamer, really nice picture, good lumen/brightness also on eco settings with not much noise, but one thing and it was sadly a deal-breaker:

Reaction time was super super high, even reaction time for sure is not my main priority, I don't game as often, but this was simply too much. I could not even stand the lag when I used the mouse on my computer on Windows, it was really to much.

To just watch movies  with this projector would be super, but I could not see myself gaming on it and really also using my computer via Windows was a pain in the ass bc of the lag of my cursor.

And also I found out I don't really need the 4k, 1080p is absolutely enough for me.

So basically I search something like the BenQ TK850i, could also be a bit less bright because in that departmant it was a beast, and yes with just 1080p and bit better reaction time.

And also I think that I prefer DLP.

Do you know something that would fit my bill?
