 Then I took my finger and tapped it in on the contact end. Amazingly the contacts met and the battery started to charge. It is charging now. I don't know if this can be repeated but I just purchased a 20 volt backup unit (also Black and Decker)

 A new battery would have been $96 with tax and this trimmer with batteries and a spoon was $101 with the $10 rebate. I love a battery trimmer and will never change back. Forget electric cords or gas. Pulling a cord around with you or pulling a cord 20 times to get it started is not acceptable (plus gas and oil)

 The battery lasts for all the trimming I need to do on my 1/4 acre although I don't think these batteries are meant to stay charged for long trimming jobs. I have no heavy brush and its only grass so its powerful enough for my purposes. I never need to have it at full power which gives me more time. The auto feed works well and I am still on the original string that came with the trimmer

 $5 dollars a pop for string is just too much. I hope this review helps with someone who has the same battery issue with this trimmer. I believe if my charger/battery has this issue; others may as well. Thanks for reading

  I think the auto-feed head is simply a horrible design, and I'm surprised there haven't been injuries due to the bad design. I was there was a way to replace it with a more reliable bump head, but so far I have not found any. The way it wastes string is probably great for the manufacturer since it sells more string, but it's terrible for the consumer, and the design flaw presents a safety hazard.  The trimmer is getting replaced this year with a better model, perhaps a Dewalt, with a bump head

 Thank you Black & Decker for restoring my faith in Customer Service and replacing the defective battery without a challenge.  ** UPDATE, APRIL 24 ** : For now I will increase it from 2 to 3 stars and maybe more later. After a few unsuccessful frustrating attempts to contact Black & Decker Customer Service by phone I used the email option and explained as below that the battery had failed after just 2 charges. Today I received a reply from Laurett in B&D Customer Care apologizing for in inconvenience and indicated they would be sending a new replacement battery and I should receive it within 7 business days

 I have ordered one, however a new replacement battery cost me almost $80! The entire string trimmer new cost less than $150! I find it hard to believe that more than half of the cost of the trimmer is in the battery. A battery that was very well cared for and only had 2 charge cycles on it should not fail in the first place. I cannot recommend this trimmer regardless of how well it works when the battery is functioning.

 It's not too heavy, it's pretty powerful, and it's a lot quieter/cleaner than my old 2-cycle gas engine beast. It's good for a homeowner with reasonably sized yard.  It will also take about a quarter of the time of using a mower. The corded and 18v battery (B&D) trimmers I have cannot touch this one for speed, power or convenience.  I have to manhandle mowers in this terrain but with this weed eater I just keep it out front and swinging.  The line self feed is delayed and I haven't found a way to finesse it to play out line when I want it to

 I wouldn't want to have tried on the old riding mower, electric push, or the newer self propelled gas Lawn Boy. What I am saving in gas, fumes and bent mower blades will pay for this in no time. Give it four stars after two uses. Years of frustration with gas trimmers finally drove me to try a batter powered version. I purchase a lot of tools and Black and Decker is rarely my first choice when it comes to quality and durability. Just not the company they once were but I purchased this one based on numerous positive reviews I read

 I actually tried to just get a replacement battery but was refused. I was told I had to return everything. So I actually initiated the return. Then when I went back to try to charge the battery again it worked and the station gave me the normal flashing green light instead of the odd patterned flashing red light indicating a bad battery

Note I have only used this once.  Let’s start off with assembly: Super easy. Just have to attach the guard and the handle. All you need is a Phillips head screwdriver

  Battery: This is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. On max setting you’ll get about half hour maybe a little less. Also, after my first use (which it didn’t last long enough to do my very tiny yard) the charging station was giving me a bad battery indicator. I could not get the battery to charge

 At first I thought the battery was defective, but I think that's just how it works.  EDIT: AS OF 9/03/13 THIS CHARGING PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I CONTACTED B&D CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY CONFIRMED A BAD BATCH OF BATTERIES AROUND MY DATE OF MFG. THEY ARE SENDING A REPLACEMENT BATTERY AT NO CHARGE
