 Tons of applications for this ski, you know, you see people mounting these with alpine touring bindings and using them as kind of backcountry adventure skis. I think here on the East Coast, you could mount just an alpine binding on it and use it as your go-to resort powder ski. I think this thing would be, I can think of a whole bunch of women who ski Stowe here in Vermont that would love this ski on a powder day, you know, we get a lot of tight trees, so you need to be able to make quick movements, quick maneuvers on a ski, and the Atrus Birdie does that really, really well, while also having just, you know, capability to ski really deep snow, you know, you could ski waist deep snow on this thing and veil, and it would be an absolute blast in that application too. And you can even get on firm snow, you know, usually on a powder day, especially a West Coast powder day, chances are you're going to have to get on a cat track at some point and at least just to navigate around the mountain, and the Atrus with that camber and the 108 waist width, you know, it's not too, too wide and it still feels pretty fun on firmer snow conditions too, which is beneficial because even, you know, on a, you know, say you're going out in the backcountry to find some soft snow, chances are even if you just got a big snowfall, you will encounter some wind scoured zones and stuff like that, so having a little bit of soft snow performer, having a little bit of firm snow performance rather is really valuable in a ski like this, but yeah, overall just super playful, super fun and soft snow, great ski from Black Crow's, really like all the different Black Crow's models, I love the way that they differentiate their skis from each other, no one ski within the Black Crow's line is too much like another ski, which I think is really, really cool, so head on over to Ski Essentials if you want to read more about it, feel free to ask us any questions, happy to chat more about the Atrus Birdie, super fun ski and definitely the type of ski that's right up my alley, although I would probably opt for the men's version I suppose, but I do love this graphic, I love this, this blue, what's the, I guess the men's has some blue too, but yeah, great graphics from Black Crow's for 2021, great skis, let us know if you have any questions and we'll see you out there on the slopes

And what's great about the Atris and the Atris Birdy is they have a really, really good balance of being playful and maneuverable, you know, with that low camber height and that rocker tips and tails, you can get this thing to maneuver really, really easily. It has a surfy feel when you want it to, but you can also get it up on edge, give it some skier input, you know, initiate a turn in the forebody of the ski, and you get some good power, some good stability, and some good responsiveness out of this ski too. Really, really good float for a ski that's 108 underfoot, you know, obviously that's pretty wide already, but this tip shape, without drastic early taper, having a nice wide tip up here is going to help keep you on the surface of the snow, help keep the ski planing even at slower speeds, which is really, really nice

 Hey skiers, I'm Jeff from SkiEssentials.com. Welcome to our 2023 ski test. Today we're looking at the Black Crow's Atrus Birdie

 It is a directional freeride ski, you know, you might be looking at the twin tip back here and I certainly think it's fair to call it at least somewhat of a twin tip. But it's more designed for directional freeride playfulness and maneuverability. You could ski switch on it, you could land switch and stuff like that. It's not going to be something that you're going to want to center mount

 As a summary before we get into the details, it's still a very versatile, super fun freeride ski, loves soft snow, loves playful skiing style, but it's a little bit quicker than the previous version. And a big reason for that is Black Crow's has gone down from a 108 millimeter waist width to a 105 millimeter waist width in this new ski. So it might not sound like much, but certainly came through in our testing and our evaluation of this ski is it is noticeably quicker than the previous version. Still a 19 meter turn radius, that's pretty consistent with the outgoing Atrus

 So instead of being like straight up and down vertical sidewalls, this kind of step down cap construction to beveled, beveled sidewall actually allows the ski to be a little bit looser and a little bit more playful. Not the lightest ski in the world, but it is something that you may see people touring on. It's kind of a fringe application for this ski, but we're only at 1800 grams here and a 172, so it's not like it's, you know, it's not super, super heavy. It's not going to weigh you down a ton if you do choose to put like a hybrid touring binding on it or something like that

 As you can see, there's plenty of tip and tail rocker and a few millimeters of camber underfoot as well, just to hold a nice grip too. With that rocker and camber profile, you're getting a ski that's fun to ski, easy to maneuver, and then also just fantastically responsive when you feel like pushing it. So the Atchis Birdie is definitely a shop favorite here, and it can be the solution to that one ski quiver that so many folks seem to be after recently. This ski was really built for a rider who is hungrier for some of those bigger lines, but also wants something really versatile

 Today we'll be talking about Black Crow's Atchis Birdie, which is a really fun-loving freeride ski. It's one of Black Crow's most versatile big mountain skis. For the construction of the ski, it's a full poplar core, no metal in the ski at all. Basically this means it performs really well at high speeds, it's stable when you need it to be, but it still has an element of playfulness to it

 If you're more of a relaxed advanced skier, we would suggest looking at the slightly narrower options from Black Crow, such as the Camox Birdie or the Cactus Birdie. Overall we think the Atris Birdie is a strong contender for those advanced to expert skiers who are looking for a ski to do everything, but primarily want performance in both steep and deep situations. If this sounds like you, then we recommend checking out the 2020 Black Crow Atris Birdie.

 A semi-cap construction means that there is sidewall underfoot, where the most power is transferred through the ski and a cap construction before and after the bindings. The top sheet wraps around the sides and meets the edges, this reduces weight and increases durability. The medium classic camber, rising underfoot and dropping down before the rockers, is a good balance between stability and manoeuvrability, that also leaves a moderate amount of ski to snow contact. The sintered base holds wax extremely well, allowing you to go faster for longer and are easier to maintain for those who do it at home

 The poplar core adds a firm and consistent flex to the ski, but as this is the women's version the flex is slightly softer. This is due to the core being thinner than the men's, also reducing weight by 450 grams per pair.  They do do something with the sidewall of the ski as well. So full sidewall underfoot here, so through the binding area, and then it does taper down into kind of a half sidewall construction. So that's going to increase the maneuverability and the quickness of the ski towards the ends while keeping the edge grip nice and strong underfoot. And like you'd want to see with a bunch of fresh snow, this ski does have a good rocker profile to it as well, a nice extended rocker in the shovel here starting a little bit below the taper line so that gives you a nice smooth pop into the turn, really jumps you up out of the snow

 So that's going to increase the maneuverability and the quickness of the ski towards the ends while keeping the edge grip nice and strong underfoot. And like you'd want to see with a bunch of fresh snow, this ski does have a good rocker profile to it as well, a nice extended rocker in the shovel here starting a little bit below the taper line so that gives you a nice smooth pop into the turn, really jumps you up out of the snow. And then in the tail, same thing, just a little bit below where the taper is and then kind of a moderate splay to the twin tip here. So that's going to increase the playfulness and maneuverability at the tail end of the ski

 So again, what they do with the poplar wood core does matter how they shape and profile it. With that extra material, it is a pretty big ski, definitely in that resort powder ski, it does give the ski more strength and power just because there's more material to it. This is the 178 and it's just a really nice, well-rounded ski. You can kind of see where that taper comes to about here underfoot, in the shovel I'm sorry, and a nice even progressive flex throughout

 This is the same build and shape as the men's ski, it's just available in shorter lengths and with a different graphic. So if you're looking for the shorter size in this Atrus ski, the Birdie is the way to go. In terms of construction, we've got a full poplar wood core here. Pretty simple, but like we see with a lot of Black Crow's skis, it's impressive what they can do with just a poplar wood core with what they do with the shape and the profile
