For these users, the Black Diamond Whippet is a classic standby in the steep skiing world. The most recent iteration builds upon the product's past successes, adding a removable pick design. In short, it functions as a standard three-section telescoping backcountry ski pole while skinning up or skiing down, with the option to attach the pick to the top of the grip when you want. The result is a high-performance pole and the best of the ski pole/ice axe hybrids on the market.
The biggest downside to the Whippet is its weight. With the pick attached, the pole weighs about twice as much as other models. The higher swing weight is not particularly noticeable, especially in steep terrain, where our minds are generally on other things. We're a bit dismayed that the pole is sold only as a single, individual pole. If it came in a set, it would be the only pair of backcountry poles you'd ever need.

Great for Specific ski oriented Arrest

 The pole itself is easily adjustable and very sturdy (I opted for the non-carbon pole as it compresses more than the carbon version, which I really appreciate). It stands up to the high strength standards of my previous black diamond poles, but its even easier to adjust with black diamonds updated flick lock system. I was traversing steep snow and slush and it was really great to not have to swap back and forth with my ice ax as I have had to do in the past. Previously during longer snow climbs I had to switch between standard poles and an ax for short sketchy sections

 This was my first trip with one of my own and it was fantastic. It is a little top heavy, which is to be expected.  1 star for a disposable pole, 0 for transparency, customer service and responsible production.

 Customer service suggested buying a new set of poles as the solution. Black Diamond should at least have been clear that this is a throw away so people can make informed decisions about model selection. 1 star for a disposable pole, 0 for transparency, customer service and responsible production.

 This thing has caught me several times in places I really really reeeeally didn’t want to go sliding down. I feel like for ski mountaineering in the PNW, this is a must, and it’s worth every ounce of extra weight (I’d rather shave weight with my skis/boots/bindings than not carry a whippet).
