 And I'd use compression with one other drive pedal. And it sort of acts like a stage of gain, I guess you can, if you wanted to, it's not the way I do it, but you could hit the drive pedal harder with a compressor, thus making the drive compress more and distort more. My great uncle is moving far away and asked if I was interested in some old equipment. Just “some stuff” that he didn’t feel like packing and moving.

Interesting pedal. Good for funk and jazz but bad for metal.

[NGD] Did I Overdo it on the Sustain? Getting a Mark Knopfler Tone out of a Folding Guitar with No Pickup Using a BOSS CS-3 and HX Stomp Fender Model.

Unless you're playing a very specific type of music that requires compression like chickin pickin or you don't have a decent OD pedal (what guitarist doesn't) I don't think you need this. If you put it the front of your chain you lose control of ALL dynamics between your guitar and amp/pedals. If you put it at the end, you squash hi and low levels between your guitar and amp/pedals. If you plug directly into a tube amp this makes no sense at all 

Ugh, do you REALLY need a compressor?

 I've already got one installed. So it's ready to go. Screw this back in and that's the BOSS CS3 compression sustainer out of the box. All right, we're back with the CS3 compressor sustainer from BOSS

 You can already hear a slight, there's a slight boost in the noise that's going through. So it's boosting the level a little bit and let's see how it sounds. So we do get a good amount of sustain compared to the original. It's sort of a subtle effect

 Screw this back in and that's the BOSS CS3 compression sustainer out of the box. All right, we're back with the CS3 compressor sustainer from BOSS. We got it wired in and ready to go. I'm playing a Fender American Standard Telecaster and that's going into the Marshall JCM-2000 half stack, miked up with a Shure SM57
