I used to be somewhat addicted to weed and cigarettes, and as the feel good anticipation chemicals were dinging in my brain before I walked into the shop to buy this pedal I realised I’ve essentially replaced one addiction with another. Not that it’s a bad addiction though, the sy-1 is probably the most fun pedal I’ve bought. It can be wacky but also functional and it’s great that it’s polyphonic.

So today I got the Boss SY-1 for my ambient / noise heavy psych board (I ordered & paid it yesterday!). I just had some 20 minutes yet to fiddle around with it, but this thing will keep me busy exploring sounds over sounds. The tonal quality is beyond my expectations, the tracking ace and the variety of parameters overwhelming so far.

I have been unable to find any documentation on what the Boss SY-1’s 121 modes are actually meant to sound like, beyond basic umbrella terms like ‘lead’ or ‘string’. Conclusion. Maybe it would be fair to say the EHX Synth9 is great for providing classic synth sounds right out of the box, while the Boss SY-1 is a more versatile modern synth tool that you have to spend some time to tune in.

Boss SY-1 was a letdown for me. All the youtubers get great sounds out of it but, I just struggle to find anything useful.
