Lasers don't care if they sit around weeks or months without use so with your 50-100 sheet a year definitely laser is the only way to go. I checked and my two favorite current lasers in the near 200 price range, the Brother Hl-L3210CW and 3230CW seem to be out of stock on Amazon UK and at Currys however Currys has the HL-L8260CDW for £245.

The cheapest solution I could find is the Brother HL-L3210CW. The next step up, the HL-L3270CDW, adds duplex printing and higher print speeds. Note that these are technically LED xerographic printers.

Affordable Home laser printers are fine for office type documents. Not art or photograph. You’re better off getting a used A4 laser printer from the past 5-6 years + and a new A3 ink tank printer for your son. For the laser Ive found the Brother HL is decent and the WiFi connection to print docs from Mac and IPhone via AirPrint has been problem free for me.

I've had a Brother HL-L3210CW (colour laser/LED) for a couple of years, and can honestly say it's the first printer I've ever used which I haven't felt like throwing across the room. It remains plugged into power 24/7, but goes into sleep mode and connected to wi-fi. I can leave it unattended for weeks, but the moment I want to print something, it fires into life and produces perfect output every time. I suppose it's still fairly young, but it never jams or fails to feed the paper, and never has any issues with print quality.
