 I recently reviewed my clear audio concept. Turntable was in use not only with my hana ml cartridge, but the gold ring ethos. Also recently reviewed as well that was connected to my eat, igloo, petite, phono, preamp and for digital. I used either my bluesound node, 2i streamer or the iota vx mp3 network streaming and cd player, mainly for the cd player part people want to know the base performance of a speaker more than almost anything else

 The impossibly low bass lines of mark sandman's, two-string bass performance on his band morphines of the night, were noticeably absent when not being played in the most subtle of songs. The texture of a bass, guitar was never more apparent than here. That said, on the more driving of numbers played on this album, the bass guitar was so rich and plentiful that it created an atmosphere all on its own. The sound seemingly came from everywhere, but there was never a hint of muddiness boominess or any other kind of nest

 The specific waveguide shape makes sure the dispersion of the high frequencies match that of the woofer, creating a better sound stage with its control directivity. So, while the looks are certainly a stylistic choice, they're clearly for function as well. Other improvements on the mark 2 include a new, slightly larger cabinet and cabinet bracing design, adding depth to the sound and moving from an aluminum cone driver to a paper. One bucard have found a paper cone driver that has a specific mixture of natural fibers to make it more stiff to produce a quick, accurate and deep bass sound, yet still retain the superior natural sounding mids that a paper cone traditionally offers

 All of the base performances i heard during my time with the mark ii, went to 11 when adding in my svs 3000 micro subwoofer to the mix. As a matter of fact, none of the components used ever had any issue of blending brilliantly together, and i personally wouldn't want to be without this combo. That said, a subwoofer wasn't a necessity and i think you'll be quite surprised at how low and how powerful this smaller cabinet sounds. This is precisely where quality parts and superior engineering come into play

The Buchardt S400 MKII REVIEW!

The speaker in the picture it the Buchardt s400 and the stands are DIY stands made from cheap wood and some wood stain. The Buchardt s400's is a speaker with a warm presentation that can go lower than a lot of floorstanders (33 Hz in room). When placed outside, I actually experience more bass/punch than in my room (probably due to cancellation in my almost square room).

It's always a joy to bring the speakers outdoors! You basically get rid of all reflections and all you hear is the drivers themselves. The speakers sound so "pure" once you've removed 2/3 of the walls and I recommed every one to try it at least once, but make sure there's no rain on the weathercast!

 Without what made the s 400 so fun to listen to to begin with so anyways? That is enough praise for the mark ii. Now it is time to balance out this review by going over some caveats. So let's go [ Music ]! So here's the thing when you look at the s 400 mark ii, for what it really is, which is a tiny speaker, that's meant to deliver big good all-around performance. Then it's very difficult to criticize this speaker because it does such a good job of achieving its goal, and yet it's not perfect, and there are some things that you may need to be aware of if you're considering something like this for yourself, starting with bass

. So, look as you can imagine, the larger model 5 is going to give you more. Bass is going to play at louder volumes and the treble because it uses an aluminum dome. Tweeter is gon na have a bit more energy to it, more sharpness to it, which, by the way, you can't attenuate on the back of the speaker and otherwise the klh model fives do a better job of laying down a rock solid center image in a way That the s400 mark ii's can't quite muster unless you really fuss around with placement

 So what i'll do is i'll flash an image for you guys, so you can look at that and compare it to this guy right here. Okay, so that is essentially going to be it. The only other thing worth mentioning here is that the new mark ii is built in indonesia and not china. So, with all of that said now, it is time to talk about what the new mark ii brings to the table in terms of performance

 But still you may still prefer the kef because it has that sharper brighter sound. So that is it for the first comparison. So now, let's move on with the last comparison of this video okay, so i finally reached the last segment for this review. So forgive me as i just leave the camera on a tripod, and i talk to you all from the side here now

Just Ordered the New U-Turn Theory - Need Speaker Recs!

It takes the  resident Buchardt S400 up a different level and the party trick of the Accuphase is the ability to play at low volume without any loss of dynamic, soundstage and detail. Without the need of pressing the 'Comp' button.

I"ve been pondering this question for a while, particularly as my understanding of room acoustics has advanced.  Bear with me for a moment:

All the high-end "full range" speakers are floor-standing.  The need for proper stereo imaging dictates the location of these speakers, so you are denied the option of locating the woofers in the best position for sub-bass with regard to boundary interference and room modes.

Your brain/ears can't locate sounds below 80 hz, so crossing over to subs at that level doesn't affect the stereo image.  Many bookshelf speakers are flat down to 80 hz.  Well designed bookshelves with 6.5 inch woofers also have very low distortion down to that level.  At normal listening volumes, so do 5.25 inch woofers.

Bass frequencies are seriously affected by room modes.  The best way of mitigating this is with well placed multiple subs.

Bearing in mind all of the above, I don't see why anyone seeking the best possible fidelity would need to look at large floor-standing speakers, unless they don't have the budget for separate subs.

Am I missing something?  Interested to hear any opinions.

[Edit: I&#39;m so grateful for all your responses. So much useful information being shared. I&#39;ve realised that there&#39;s a logical error in my question because it doesn&#39;t take account of floor standers plus subs, which also avoids placement issues for the sub-bass transducers. I should really have asked whether bookshelves plus distributed subs can match floor standers plus distributed subs for sound quality. If so, bookshelves would be preferable to me because I prefer the smaller form factor, aesthetics etc. (Noted also that some people just prefer floor standers alone.)

Lots of very interesting points made below. Issues of driver cross-over frequencies in 3-way vs 2-ways, overall SPL and port tuned bass quality all suggest to me that a bookshelf speaker would need to be very well designed indeed to match a good floor stander. I suppose my next task is to find one that does match that performance level, if it exists!]
