The Coros Apex Pro is a favorite choice and one we'd recommend to anyone who wants a GPS watch but doesn't need the newest features and technologies. We think this is one of the best GPS watches on the market when comparing price versus performance. While still not super cheap, this watch has everything you need and recently got a software upgrade to include new navigation features. The Coros ecosystem is great and easy to use, and the battery life makes this model contend even with the premium-priced models.
A few complaints are that the data fields are a bit difficult to read when moving at high speeds or working out intensely. Also, the health metrics offer no scores or helpful descriptions of the evaluated data, unlike the Garmin products. Still, we are impressed with this model and its ability to do almost everything the top models do at a lower price point.

COROS is a rising star in the sports watch world, with a string of noteworthy releases over the past few years. The Apex is their leading mid-range model and packs in a surprising amount of features for the price, including a barometric altimeter, optical HR sensor, excellent battery life, and even a sapphire glass screen. The interface has a clear prioritization of sport-specific tracking (there are 20 modes ranging from ski touring to running) that pairs seamlessly with a smartphone app, and the color display is easy to navigate with just two buttons, one of which serves as a dial too. Finally, the Apex is a standout in terms of size and appearance, with a sleeker design than most and the choice between 42- and 46-millimeter models (the 42mm Apex has a shorter battery life and costs slightly less at $300).

While the Apex is all most endurance athletes need and nothing they don't (it’s a popular choice in our Northwest trail running community), it's true that its feature set falls well short of the high-end designs here. First off, navigation is rudimentary (a far cry from the Fenix’s detailed topographic maps), and we’ve been fairly unimpressed with the watch’s HR accuracy and limited training metrics. Second, the Apex offers no music controls, and you don’t get frills like LiveTrack or contactless payment. Finally, COROS’ firmware and app don’t quite measure up to Garmin’s, although we’ve been pleased with the regular updates. But if—like most of us—you simply need a watch that tracks your activities and doesn't die in the process, it’s hard to find a better value than the Apex. When setting up the Apex, the app asks you to select your training level (light, moderate, or hard), and set your daily calorie and exercise goals. I&rsquo;m an average runner at best, so I selected the light training level, and went with the default recommendations of 153 calories and 39 minutes of exercise. After three runs, the app fills in two additional metrics: your lactate threshold and threshold pace.  I like that they offer colorful and more subdued options to fit a range of styles. I went with Illustrator 2, which features a blue-green mountain design with the time, date, and my step count.&nbsp;

I'm looking to buy a GPS watch for hiking/trekking. But all the watches I've researched have too many features I do not need. Take Forerunner 945 and Fenix 6, for instance. I don't need a heart rate monitor, calories burn stats, an option to pre-load and store Spotify music, weather forecast, popular routes etc. Don't need a Bluetooth option too, in fact. Anything I need, my phone can do it better and more conveniently.

In short, isn't there any GPS watch that has Fenix 6/Forerunner 945 level mapping, minus the forced other features -- with the appropriate price drop accordingly?

Distraction-free GPS watch?

 This isn’t for a short period of time, it is literally for the majority of the walk. I’ve tried all of the usual tricks {watch placement, strap adjustment, etc.) with no success. I even switched arms

 For people with poor reading vision (like me), this could be an issue. Notifications are particularly problematic. I once emailed them about this when I was using the Pace 2. They replied that they didn’t have any plans to change that aspect of their interface

 I’ll start by saying that I am a very long-time Garmin hostage; I’ve literally had their devices since their first GPS watch. All my gear is ANT+…and Garmin. But, at least two times a week I grouse about Garmin’s lousy software quality control. And the ongoing battles I have with their software is endless across my watches and bike computes

 For those thinking that perhaps the Coros has a hardware issue, I should note that I had Bluetooth issues on the Pace 2 in many of the similar ways. And for those thinking it’s my phone, I had the same issue with my iPhone 11 and the Pace 2 as well. This is either the Bluetooth stack on their devices, or a poor handling of the Bluetooth API interactions on iOS.  As I finally finished my customization (new watch face, workout screen modifications [data fields]), I was able to finally start putting the Apex Pro through it’s paces

Multi-sport with A Focus On Runners

I have had a 245 for 2 years and it’s pretty dope. I really can’t see myself upgrading to a different running watch (though having Garmin Pay would be nice).

I was thinking about upgrading to a Garmin forerunner watch (probably 245) due to GPS and added functionality and metrics (pace, ground contact time, recommended workouts, etc). I've also realized a lot of my fitbit's features are behind a pay wall. 
Has anyone else went for it and is it worth it?

Upgrading from Fitbit to Garmin

 I almost forgot I had it on at times. The battery life is the selling point of this watch (and frankly, all Coros products). A bit better than what I get on my Fenix 6X.  The trade-off in software and lack of data ultimately had me stick with Garmin though

It looks like my Garmin Forerunner 225 is giving up the ghost after seven years of service. I am in the market for a new GPS watch and would love some recommendations from those who keep up with this stuff.

Some relevant characteristics:

* I'm really just looking for something that can tell me how far I've run and how fast. I don't need music function or even optical HR in the wrist. 
* I've used Garmin stuff in the past but I'm not particularly brand loyal. 
* My old Forerunner had good basic functionality, but there were a few design flaws that bugged me over time. Notably, the cord would consistently fail after a few years (the plastic casing would wear out due to mechanical stress and then the wires would fray through), and getting the watch to connect with the cord cradle was sometimes made difficult because of poor design.
* I don't need any features I won't use, but I also don't want to wind up needing another new watch in two years. I don't mind paying for a quality product that will last.

Watch recommendations, please!

 The HR monitor works well if the band is tight. But the silicone bands are not very strong and after a couple months of regular use began to tear. Checking with warranty service, it turns out that the advertised warranty of 2 years only applies to the main watch, they will only support the bands for 90 days. I emailed them on the 100th day, so no support

Both cheap, amazing battery life, simple and easy. Far better than equivalently priced Garmin etc.

What are your favorite watches that have reliable gps, long battery life, and aren't super expensive? It's been quite a few years since I bought a new, more serious running watch and I just don't know where to start, even with all the reviews and guides out there. What are your suggestions?

 It gets covered in sweat and then sawdust clings to it for hours sometimes but the buttons still work like new. Toughest watch I've owned. The battery life is still great and it charges quickly. The company still releases regular firmware updates with fixes and features

 It's fairly easy to do from the iPhone app but sometimes I'd rather do it from my laptop.

 And, it's just hard to see some of the data I want to see, like HR during specific parts of a workout. The iPhone app interface is why I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 star and I'd probably only deduct half a start if that were possible.

* Battery life - Awesome. I haven't run it all the way down to see if it gets exactly what is advertised but 2 weeks is usually around 50% and I run the GPS about 5 hours/week.
