 I picked it up in 2002 right when they came out. It was cheap, which was good for me because it was 2002 and I didn't have a lot of money. It's light, it's got a short scale neck so it plays really fast, and it sounds really good for as cheap as it is and as light as it is, it has a really nice tone, it's got nice reverberation, I really like how it plays. I think I got it for $200, maybe $250

 They're great because they've got, like I said, a short scale neck and it's a triple octave neck so you can get down there and play that 24th fret that you can't get to play on most basses. It's a big cutaway just like a Les Paul, so you've got plenty of room to maneuver down there. I'm upgrading actually this weekend, I'm going to pick up one of the Lakeland Daryl Jones models which are made in Chicago and I just was tooling around with over at Sam Ash in Buffalo Grove last week and they just sound amazing. The neck's really fast, it's kind of like a jazz bass where the neck gets really small by the nut, so it's a nice transition from the short scale Dan O bass because it's still fast, it's still a little narrower than a P bass and it just sounds amazing

Danelectro Longhorn Bass: The Truth On Danelectro Basses

I highly recommend the Danelectro basses. I have the 59dc which is a long scale bass but to my ears it has a lot of similar tonal character to a Rickenbacker (having owned both). If you’re looking for a short scale option the Danelectro Longhorn bass could be a great option, but I have never personally played one. They’re affordable and vintage-voiced, and while it’s true nothing sounds like a Rick except a Rick, to my ears these things are the best and closest option under $1000

I have a PJ Bass which does the stringy rocky sound with which I'm really happy BUT I'm looking to get a shortscale with flatwounds for a more soulfull sound within the price range of 100/160euros (I know it's a bit cheap but that's all I can afford with our daughter on the way).
I'm currently eyeing the Ibanez TMB-30 because of it's diverse pickup setup.
I've played one and it gets nice and subby + it can also do some nice mid rangey stuff...
BUT it doesn't have a lot of character. It doesn't get into that colourful territory.
I was wondering if at some point down the line I could get closer to that sound by getting vintage/Rickenbacker voiced pickups?
I'm worried that they might not fit in the body when I get to that point :S

I also have the option to buy a Hofner Galaxie shortscale bass but I don't have the option to test it since it's across the border...

Not sure if this is possible at all but hey, won't get anywhere at all without askin.

If there's any other shortscale options out there I'd love to hear it!

Love the thumpy/quacky Rickenbacker sound 🤩 How can I make a shortscale sound that way?

Mine came out of the box looking beautiful! The sound, I play this through a new Eden 8" amp for bass, is also not like the muddy-duddies i tried at Guitar Center before settling on this. (i was seeking a bass for up to $500, switched amps and tried fifteen basses on six amps,..

 I heard it is made cheaply, but i am no thunder-thumb-er, and it is sturdy and stays in tune and looks like my kind of freaky. if the J and the P do not move you on your tests, try this out! I started with an early 70s SG style bass twenty-five years ago that for me sounded like Geezer Butler, maybe that informs me here, I do not know. Tone is so subjective. If you ain't found yours yet, and you haven't tried these out, i encourage you to dig in

 You've got these Christon style, very traditional looking tuners and dual concentric controls, so tone dealt with independently for each pickup on the top and then volume underneath this cool plexiglass scratch plate. And this kind of leatherette style binding going the whole way around the body. For me its a rickenbacker, tried a few and just can't get on with em. Dont like how they feel to play at all but the producer I recorded with recently stated 'people don't play ricks for how they feel'.

What bass do you have absolutely no interest in owning and why?

You're Gonna Love this Bass....Really!

 The action was really high. I lowered the action. I did it by just adjusting the bridge and then, of course, making sure that this was set to the proper angle. You can see mine's pretty angled to get the intonation

 And I'm going to show you how I use this bass and why I think a short scale bass is a better instrument for a lot of guitar players, even bass beginners. You know, I mean, there's some concerns that if you start on a short scale, would it be harder to go to the to the full scale? Well, it depends. It depends on what the long term goal is. I like these instruments for a lot of reasons

 The bridge is a one piece with a piece of wood right there. And so if you're asking about intonation, you kind of just move it and adjust it until it's in the right intonation. This is an older instrument. And let's be honest, we're not going to be playing some crazy technical stuff on this

Danelectro '58 Longhorn Short Scale Bass

I love my '75 reissue Jazz Bass, and you'll only pry it from my cold, dead hands. Problem is, that slab of ash gets even heavier by the end of the night than it did when I was a younger man. Not to mention, I had a CTS/repetitive stress injury scare back in the late 90s that I never quite fully recovered from, and my hands have never been very big, so its 34" scale wears my hands and forearms completely out by the third set in my party/wedding "dad rock" band. I've been looking for something easier to manage that will get me through the night. 

Some features I want and need, and other points:

- 30"-32" scale, preferably

- LIGHT WEIGHT. I'd love to just grab a reissue of my beloved long-gone EB3, but Jesus, it was even heavier than my Jazz. A semi-hollow would be fantastic.

- Retail price of &lt;$600

- Basses I've shopped online, since I have so little time to actually go play things at the store: Ibanez Mezzo, Ibanez AGB200, Epiphone Rumblekat.

- I have always been a fan of the look, feel, sound, and weight of the entire Ibanez Soundgear series; I have always found them very comfortable, even with a 34" scale.

Note: overpaying at retail price is against my religion, so used versions of any suggestions are totally okey-dokey. I'm a regular contributor over at r/drums, where I have become a meme in that sub for answering every gear buying question with "what's on Craigslist in your town?" The problem is, I have not kept up with what's out there in the bass guitar market in over 20 years, so even if I find a promising ad, I'm not sure whether it's even worth leaving the house to go check out. On the other hand, repairs and mods don't scare me - the guitarist in my band is an honest-to-god luthier, so if I need to upgrade pickups or anything like that, I can have it done for free at his house, so I'm also not beyond a little hot-rodding either. There's a high likelihood that anything I might get with a P/J configuration will probably just end up sporting that set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders I've only wanted for 30 years.

In general, though, I could not care less about "sound" - that's in my hands. Yes, I know all about the flappy low E on many short-scale basses, and it's less of a problem than my real problems. I'm mostly copping a nice, safe "James Jamerson's P-Bass through a B15" tone in this band anyway, so crystal-clear highs and piano-like lows are not necessary. I just need something I can comfortably play for hours on end, and I'll worry about the sound once I have something I can play.

Any suggestions for a worn-out old fart who don't know nothin' about nothin' no more, who just wants to come home from the gig with fewer arm and back cramps?

Shopping advice for a beat-up old fart whose last market research was circa 2001?

I came from playing piano and guitar and took up bass a little over 6 months ago. I bought my first bass but immediately got surprised about how wide the frets are compared to an electric guitar. Issue here is I have really short and kinda fat fingers. For reference, I'm a 5ft 7inch guy and my gf is 5 ft 3inch, and she still have longer slender fingers than mine.

Now I have a hard time playing my bass especially for the faster and more difficult bass lines. I never heard of short scale bases up until I saw a short scale bass post a few days ago. Is it really different in terms of feel and playability? Im thinking of trading my current bass for a short scale one. Need help here. Thanks everyone!

<p>EDIT: Thanks a lot everyone! Learned a lot of new options. I tried the down tune + capo thing to simulate a short scale bass and it seems that there is a difference in playability but not as much as I expected. so I&#39;ll just stick with my bass for now and use those virtuoso kids on youtube killing it on a full scale bass as my inspiration to suck it up and accept my short stubby fingers haha</p>

Hello, i've never picked up a bass before in my life and i'm looking for a small (i have small hands) bass that won't break the bank. I would only be using it for recording purposes so it doesn't need to look cool or anything but any suggestions would be very helpful. Also, would I still need an amp if i'm just using it to record?
