 ARRRGH  So, if I can't get a new tray from Duralit, I guess I'll make my own, not something I expected to have to do with the supposed best toaster in the world.  OK, so what do I like about it? Well, I love the fact that it keeps the toast in the toaster until you pop it up yourself to keep the toast warm. I love that you dial in exactly how many slices of toast you are toasting. No wasted heat

 I have never before unplugged my toaster after use, but I guess that is why Duralit now prints "unplug after use, fire risk" on the timer dial. LOL, I guess if you sell a crappy timer that will possibly burn your house down, that's a pretty honest statement! OH, and now I have to pay $48 for a replacement timer. Alternatively I could send the toaster back and wait weeks for service.

 I love the heft and style. And though I thought I'd hate the egg-timer noise it makes while toasting, surprisingly I just don't. It's not that loud and less annoying than the large bell at the end of the cycle in the last Cuisinart I had. I'm willing to live with it knowing it (supposedly) means its a more durable timer and it adds to the quirkiness

 BUT, we then noticed a burning smell and realized the toaster was cooking the underside of our top cabinets, which were extremely hot to the touch. There is a high likely hood that a fire could have been started. Great toaster...but

My new Dualit is replacing one that I had to replace after 13 years of very, very happy ownership and daily use after the heating elements failed, and that I would easily give 5 stars. My new Dualit has several improvements - the mechanical timer is noticeably quieter than the older unit (though that makes it harder to hear across my kitchen). I could swear that the openings are wider on my new Dualit, which is a very welcome development, and the heating elements appear to have been redesigned and improved. The updated control for selecting one or two slices also may be easier to read than the old rocker switch, which would be another appreciated improvement

But the new timer counterintuitively shuts off half-way through the final "minute", whereas the timer on my old Dualit ran until the "0" mark was reached. Consequently I'm still trying to adapt to the new Dualit's timer. (It's important to point out that the timings on my old Dualit never changed over the life of the toaster, and consequently may be permanently ingrained in my psyche.) The feet on my new Dualit also seem more slippery than on the old one, which is particularly noticeable after I clean my counter

 Most modern toasters don't any longer require timers because they are instrumented with modern sensors and computer chips that know when your bread is properly toasted. Amazingly this toaster uses a vintage 1970s timer. Come on Brits, I know you guys are smarter than that. Engineer things like they are supposed be in the 21st century, not the 1970s

Received a Broken Toaster

A Bread Maker's Take

This toaster is built solidly and has a quality feel and look to it. Unfortunately, I can’t review it’s toasting abilities, because it arrived with a limp ejector knob due to a broken bolt on one of the beakers. I will update my review once I obtain a replacement, but at $300+ dollars, this thing needs to be perfect and the screws used should come from Rolls Royce not China. I love premium products that are hand built, but if you intend to charge for that distinction, packing and quality need to be top notch with zero errors

Beautiful but beware

 Perhaps that is just the way the timer dial is designed, but it would be nice if Dualit had addressed it in the instruction guide. The fourth reason, is that the slots are not wide enough to hold a jumbo bagel without smashing it a bit. I personally prefer the Thomas Mini Bagels, which will get practically lost in any toaster, but my husband and son prefer the jumbo bagels. Even though this product is made in England, and perhaps English people don't eat bagels, it would still behoove Dualit to redesign the product with wider slots

 After 3 1/2 years we are well used to the switch now, and no longer forget about it. But for the first year or so, we ruined quite a few batches of toast. The third reason is the timer dial. Sometimes I decide to pop up my toast early, and there is still a good bit of time left on the dial

 I love the lever that lets me check my toast any time I want, without actually stopping the toasting. Another reason I like this lever is because I usually buy Thomas's Mini Bagels. In a normal toaster, you'd have to dig these small bagels out with wooden tongs. In the Dualit, I simply give the lever a swift swat, and they pop right out

 I personally prefer the Thomas Mini Bagels, which will get practically lost in any toaster, but my husband and son prefer the jumbo bagels. Even though this product is made in England, and perhaps English people don't eat bagels, it would still behoove Dualit to redesign the product with wider slots..

A review after 3 1/2 years of use...

 If you have inserted your bread or bagel in advance of turning the knob, these will heat as well. If you've turned the knob just exactly enough, you may end up with a baked good that is fairly well toasted.

1. The design of the knob that starts the toasting means you are forever guessing at what "number" or "dash" to aim for to get your preferred level of toasting. Yes, there is a little knob/lever (more on that later) to pop the toast out and see if it's done yet, but if you use the same kind of bread regularly it would be nice to just set the toaster once and know you're going to get the right result instead of almost the right result. We regularly got slight underdone or overdone toast by "missing the mark" just a little bit, even when we thought we knew what we were aiming for

 Toasters that have slots where you lift the toast "straight up" will not have this problem, however.

 Whatever you put in gets pushed toward you (toward the lever) as it gets pushed up, and your food can be "squished" a bit. This seems like another (perhaps minor) design issue. Toasters that have slots where you lift the toast "straight up" will not have this problem, however.

 Other than that, it runs well and makes delicious toast. I would recommend.  UPDATE: Time to throw this toaster in the trash since it now fails to do the one thing it's designed to do: MAKE TOAST. Two of the four slots have already failed and I'm not going to go through the hassle of trying to get it repaired

 The fact that you can designate 1, 2, 3 or 4 slices is a selling point. Love the arm that allows you to lift the toast to check on its doneness. My only complaint is the timer. If your toast reaches your desired doneness and there's still time on the rotary timer it's pretty much impossible to stop the toaster until the timer runs out
