 Now that doesn't, you know, dynamic versus condenser is it's all a matter of choice and how it sounds for you. There's nothing that says you have to use a dynamic versus having to use a condenser. This particular microphone is really optimized for vocals. So you absolutely can use this for for voice work, especially audiobook, long-form narration, podcasting, streaming, something like that

 There's probably a pretty significant difference in the in the bass response for each of these microphones, especially as you start to get up close to them trying not to pop that Neumann, but as you get up close to this microphone, it can sound very very muscular is the word I like to use for it. So it's a really authoritative sound you can get out of this microphone. Whereas it's less in the RE20 now as far as warmth or clarity does it sound better? Does it sound worse? Does it sound the same? It's really up for you to decide which one you think sounds better for well, you can see how it sounds for my voice and then maybe maybe extrapolate how it might sound for yours. There's one other microphone that I'd like to test this with that I don't have with me, but I did a previous review

 Now. I am a foot, maybe 14 inches off the microphone, not far at all, but you'll see that I get much louder, much, there's a great big difference between being 14 inches off the microphone and being an inch off the microphone, really a huge difference and that you can use that to your advantage. If you have a source of noise nearby that you're having difficulty getting out of your recording. So if you're if you're streaming or something like that and you've got a loud computer fan, a dynamic can help because it will be less sensitive at a distance and because you generally want to be so up close to the microphone, the volume difference between your voice and the source of noise can be very significant

Bottom Line: I GAVE the microphone away within 6 months. The microphone just wasn't a good match for me. I don't project my voice well (i.e

I've got a pretty deep voice, and also have a Shure SM7B. Either I don't have something set up correctly or this microphone just does not match my voice at all....or perhaps my understanding and expectations about mics in general are completely off. I understand that different mics compliment different voices and you need to find the right match. The main issue is that my voice sounds very low with no highs at all, And there's a digital scratchiness inherent in all recordings no matter my signal path. Do all microphones have this? My expectation is that my voice would sound exactly reproduced and buttery smooth. But that's not the case. 

So let's talk through this. I bought the Shure based on reputation. However when I record, there are three main issues. First there's a bit of crackle or static somewhere in the mid to high range. Second, It's just a dark sounding microphone without very many highs. Third to get a quality recording I need to be about an inch or two off of the front of the mic, which I understand causes proximity effect, but I actually like the tone of proximity effect, however this may be part of the issue. An analysis follows:

Regarding the first issue, I have mogami gold cables brand new all plugged in properly. I run the mic into a cloud lifter and then into a DBX 286, into the solid state logic SSL2. I have tried every combination of signal routing, from microphone directly into interface, with and without cloud lifter, with and without 286. Regardless I still always have a little bit of staticky crackle. 

Regarding the second issue I understand this is a darker microphone, And perhaps I would do better with an RE20 or Heil 40. But there's literally no way for me to test either I have to order them as we are in a very rural area. 

Regarding the third issue, I'm beginning to wonder if my voice in general which is very deep and fairly powerful, maybe the SM7B just can't handle my certain frequencies. I've tried all sorts of EQ from increasing the high presence in the DBX286 to post-production EQ boosting and shelving. But that just adds presence and sparkle to a still dull and low sounding recording. I actually like the sound of proximity effect. But for testing purposes I've tried numerous positions. About a fist length away, I get a lot of room reverb and the voice sounds distant and hollow. I know that's a part of needing a better recording space, but the first problem still persists as well. 

I play back my recordings through the SSL 2 using a combination of Sennheiser HD 25, HD 600, and mackie MR824 and the results are always the exact same.


TLDR; shure SM7B sounds like shit with my low voice, perhaps an EV RE20 would be better, but my expectations are off.

Can we talk about the Shure SM7B for deep voices?

  Edit: I ended up getting a replacement because I just like the audio so much more than the SM7B. The buzz still exists with this model if I have the chain as microphone -> cable -> fethead -> interface. However, this time the buzz gets removed if the chain is set as microphone -> fethead -> cable -> interface. With my first mic, the noise persisted regardless of how I set up the chain

 It's something to do with manufacturing changes made after 2012 that leads to the microphone sometimes accentuating and boosting the electrical noises that it's meant to get rid of.  Regardless, i bought this microphone to replace my SM7B because I liked the audio overall more than the SM7B in the comparisons I saw online for voice/guitar and was hoping I would not get one of the faulty mics. I ended up with the annoying coil/electrical noise sadly.  Not worth the risk of investment/time to repeatedly go through a return and replacement process to receive a working one for me

 That's what you're going to get when you're going to get that kind of cool radio announcer style effect. It even says on the box here broadcast announcer's microphone. So it really does what it says on the tin literally. This is designed for live broadcasts

 And this basically means if I go off to the side here or if I'm kind of over here you won't be able to hear me as well. Whereas when I'm right up on front of the microphone that's when you're going to get the best sound quality. That's what you're going to get when you're going to get that kind of cool radio announcer style effect. It even says on the box here broadcast announcer's microphone

What is your go-to kick mic for both budget AND quality?

 Tested out different DACS (the USB one I use is a Focusrite Scarlett Solo), tested out many cables, I eventually concluded the microphone needed to be repaired/replaced. I contacted customer service of Electrovoice and they sent me a new one. That one worked like a charm, no background noise, things were great. Then, 3 months later, same exact thing, but this time the background noise was worse

 So, I decided to buy a Shure SM7B. So far, haven't had any issue with that mic.  TLDR: Sound quality is amazing, but noise isolation degrades over time. Buzzing can happen, it's a problem online that many more people face with this microphone

 I looked up the problem, turns out this is common with this microphone. I thought maybe this had to do with my recording environment, but no matter where I recorded, I always got the same buzzing. So, I decided to buy a Shure SM7B. So far, haven't had any issue with that mic

I'm looking for recommendations. I am getting an amazing opportunity to do my first live podcast episode through a publisher I work with. I want the episode to be perfect, so I'm interested in ideas on expanding my gear. What I have now works well with my Zoom-recorded and Hindenburg-edited podcasts. My sound quality is fine and I don't use video. However, I'm about to do that obviously for the live portion. Here's what I currently use:

Microphone: Samson Q2U

Headphones: Samson over the ear

Computer: Asus Zephyrus G14 with an external webcam (1080p)

One thing I definitely wonder about is if I should add a sound isolation to my equipment setup. I don't have echo now, but I wonder if I could get just a little clearer if I had the protection behind my microphone. Thoughts on that? Is there other gear I'm not considering but I should? I don't think I struggle with "p"s, but is this the time to upgrade to a pop filter? What about a mixer?

To be completely honest, some of this is me dreaming a little, but in reality, I still want this episode to be the best one ever. Would appreciate your feedback.

Upgrading/expanding my gear recommendations please.

This mic is really great for live broadcasting like in radio stations, because the captured voice does not change much when you move your head left and right as you talk. Also I think there is a kind of a built-in equalizer that makes the voice sounds like `crispy voice' on air. For me, It is great.

 A lot of people are going to record it at a certain level and then boost it afterwards. But if you're going to live stream with this thing, it needs to be brought up to the proper level as you put it out on your stream. But the bigger point here is that at 55 dB of gain, this microphone does not make a ton of self noise. And that's not something, again, I hate to go back to the SM7B, but if these two are side by side, this one is a lot more quiet, a lot less self noise for the RE20

 And the RE20, I really feel like has that top end. It has way more top end than I would expect from a dynamic mic, which is a great thing because it does replicate, I feel like the voice a little bit better. Now with that said, there is such a thing as too much. And if I were recording this for an audio book or some type of long form narration where there could be fatigue on the ears, I might turn down the old crispiness just a little bit, but that's the great thing about this mic

 Variable D, I truly feel like it does make a difference for close talking. Now I'm backed off the mic here to a fair amount, you know, at least a good six inches. But when I get right up on the mic here, and sorry if I popped it a little bit there. When I get right up on the microphone here, you're not hearing an excess of boominess
