 Hi everyone, stick here for Maplewood Studio and today I'm at Anderson's Music Store in Guildford checking out some bass guitars and in my hands I have the Epiphone Thunderbird Reverse 4 bass. Okay so let me take you through the spec, we have obviously the classic Thunderbird shape, we've got a mahogany body, we've got a dark maple, a hard maple neck so the colour is pretty consistent with the mahogany stain and everything so it looks like it should be there, a rosewood board with 20 frets, it's kind of a slightly chunkier neck than your or slightly fatter than the profile, it feels slightly bigger in the hand than your typical jazz and P bass or the Stingray behind me, it feels a little bit wider, it's probably if you've got small hands it might not be for you but I would suggest grabbing hold of one and trying it first to see if you like it or not. We've got obviously the classic Thunderbird style headstock, the tuning pegs, bear in mind this is a very very affordable bass they're not the best in the world, they do the job but they're a little bit you know could be a lot more positive, a lot more precise in adjustment and tuning but they do the job and they get you up and running. Electronic wise we have two humbuckers, I think these are called T bass plus humbuckers, very simple configuration, volume for the front, volume for the back, master tone and we have a nice black hardware bridge going on there, again with three anchor points, all very typical traditional Thunderbird stuff with a string loading over the top

 We've got obviously the classic Thunderbird style headstock, the tuning pegs, bear in mind this is a very very affordable bass they're not the best in the world, they do the job but they're a little bit you know could be a lot more positive, a lot more precise in adjustment and tuning but they do the job and they get you up and running. Electronic wise we have two humbuckers, I think these are called T bass plus humbuckers, very simple configuration, volume for the front, volume for the back, master tone and we have a nice black hardware bridge going on there, again with three anchor points, all very typical traditional Thunderbird stuff with a string loading over the top. Overall excellent build quality, finish is great, I kind of like the old retro look of the natural tobacco burst kind of thing with the white scratch plate. The big difference is the neck joint, on a traditional Gibson you'd have a set neck, bear in mind this is an affordable guitar, very affordable guitar, we've got the bolt on neck configuration here, not a bad thing in any way shape or form, it's just a big difference between the two basses

Epiphone Thunderbird Reverse Bass Guitars are GO!

The drummer of my band just lent me his epiphone thunderbird and I am blown away by how good it sounds. Ive always heard predominantly not good things about the thunderbird such as it being too muddy or it having a bad tone, along with the neck dive and awkward body shape. After putting on some fresh strings and running it through my rig i am in love with how it sounds! The low end/ low mids are super tight and the mid to high midrange is very present and bright!

 I have two of those and they are well worth buying - the basses fit quite snugly in them. I would not trust a normal gig bag to protect the body on one of these basses.

This bass has some annoying scratch marks on the upper rear horn, a small chip on the front of the headstock and the neck isn't quite straight, so it will need the truss rod adjusting. I suspect the packaging is to blame for the scratches. I don't now have the packaging to return it (as I just used it to return another one with different damage issues). It will need an amount of work before I can take it on a stage

  If you are looking for a Thunderbird without paying the excessive price for a new Gibson, I would seriously consider buying the neck-through Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV EBTCAWBH1 4 String Bass Guitar. I have one bought of those in Arctic White after playing and checking it instore and the American Gibson pickups are far superior. More presence and depth to the sound. The action is fantastic

 I don't now have the packaging to return it (as I just used it to return another one with different damage issues). It will need an amount of work before I can take it on a stage.  As far as the actual performance of this bass is concerned, it plays reasonably well and has that bottomy Gibson 'thuddy' sound from both pickups. The treble end is by nature not accentuated on this bass and blending the pickup volumes won't bring out treble frequencies

The sunburst version is an old favourite.

 So we've got two pickups, we've got two volume controls and a tone. So what I'll do is I'll turn the volume down on the bridge pickup, just giving you the neck. Okay, that's just the neck. So if I kill the volume on that now, bring in the bridge, just give you the bridge

 But it not only looks great, it sounds great too, and you can get a range of different tones out of the guitar. So let's check it out. So we've got two pickups, we've got two volume controls and a tone. So what I'll do is I'll turn the volume down on the bridge pickup, just giving you the neck

 Okay, that's just the neck. So if I kill the volume on that now, bring in the bridge, just give you the bridge. Okay, and now what I'll do is I'll bring both the volumes up for both pickups, so you're getting both together. It's a really versatile bass actually, tone-wise

What basses hit above their price point?

I bought this bass as a backup to my '82 Ibanez Roadstar II. Out of the box, the intonation was perfect and it has a smooth, playable neck. It is much heavier than my Ibanez and has a larger and longer neck that will take getting used to. The neck reminds me of a J-bass neck

My major problems with it are the unbalanced feel that can probably be fixed by different strap placement, which may void the warranty

Not Bad - Just Awkward

 Output jack in the wood along with the knobs up front. It features two volume controls, so you have a separate volume for your front pickup and a volume control for your back pickup, a shared tone control which is a treble roll-off, which is very typical. The strings, string through the bridge, it's a top load bass, so the strings are all accessible from the top of the instrument. Three points on this, plenty of adjustment as far as action and intonation

Epiphone - Thunderbird IV  Bass

I'm primarily a filthy 6-string guitarist, but I have an Epiphone Thunderbird and it's great. My favourite thing about it is the reason I went for the Thunderbird in the first place: it looks so different to the vast majority of basses that most people have. It helps that it has a pretty nice deep growling tone, too.

I recently got a second bass, and I noticed that with two basses it's easier to pick out their unique characteristics. I found I love both of them, but in different ways.

 In fact, my only complaints about the insturment were that it was awkward to play while sitting down. It wasn't THAT bad, for those of you who've played a "V" sitting down, but it did take getting used to. My only "real" complaint then is, as another reviewer stated, the guitar is head-heavy and will tip down a bit if you let go of the neck momentarily. Once my neck swung down and smaked the floor! But its built tough, and there wasn't a ding or a nick

This guitar looks very close to its Gibson counterpart, though they differ, mainly in the fact that the Epiphone has a bolt-on neck.
