Photo quality prints on a budget?

The Epson Expression Photo XP-55 doesn't have any gray inks and you don't really want to print 50 pictures per day with tiny ink cartridges like this.

A high-quality printer similar to Canon Pro-100?

I am an artist looking to make my prints at home for ease of selling and creative control. I make watercolor, pencil, and digital illustrations mostly, and I would prefer printing on mostly matte high-quality art papers. I take photographs too. I am not sure if this sub is the best place to ask about recommendations for art-specific printers, but if so I'd love suggestions!

I want to be able to print large format and with different papers - such as a watercolor esque paper for watercolor prints - and my budget is not more than $1000. So that rules out a lot right there. Based on my initial research it seems I'm looking at the Pixma Pro 100 and Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 Wide-Format. I won't be printing a lot at the beginning, so speed and efficiency aren't quite as important. I also don't have a preference atm between dye ink vs pigment ink. 

Also of note: I have an old Epson R1800 that needs new ink and hasn't been used in a few years. I got it for free. I am not sure whether to waste money on trying to refurb it. I assume the print heads are unusable but I haven't tested yet, because I would have to buy ink. And it looks like I can't buy any individual ink for this printer, it seems like I need to buy a whole set, when the only one that's low is Cyan. So it would set me back around $100 just to test the printer. Any thoughts?

Need a fine art wide format printer

 I hope that when I change the inks, the printer will recognise the tanks. On the Canon, it didn’t!

 I bought the printer without ink tanks but the ones that did come with the printer seem to print quite a few large test prints so I can make my mind up before they run out. They actually seem to last a tad longer than the Canon ones did. I hope that when I change the inks, the printer will recognise the tanks. On the Canon, it didn’t!

 I didn't purchase the advertised pack, thank god but I didn't know that I would have to spend £112 on bloody ink for this thing!!!  Also, be careful with A3 prints. It cannot print on 80GSM. I tried everything and the print head just tears the paper. In the instruction manual it claims 75GSM but I think that's for A4 only

  Also, Epson only make Red and Grey XL. The only multi-pack that is compatible with this printer that I can find is the C13T379D4010 which is the pack that comes with Red and Grey and it's only XL! So the cost is £112!!!  I don't understand why Amazon is still advertising the light cyan and light magenta as compatible! I purchased this printer on the fact the ink (£53 pack) was doable. I didn't purchase the advertised pack, thank god but I didn't know that I would have to spend £112 on bloody ink for this thing!!!  Also, be careful with A3 prints. It cannot print on 80GSM

Be careful with this purchase! Amazon claim that the Squirrel 378 pack with the light cyan and light magenta is compatible - it is NOT. Do not buy the bundle pack advertised for this product! Epson are just as bad not knowing what's what with their inks.  Also, Epson only make Red and Grey XL. The only multi-pack that is compatible with this printer that I can find is the C13T379D4010 which is the pack that comes with Red and Grey and it's only XL! So the cost is £112!!! So, while the machine wasted all my ink trying to print on A3 at different settings, I had to purchase much thicker paper.  It is a good printer with good quality prints and it is very easy to use, but it is a money hole when it comes to inks and with Amazon STILL advertising the INCORRECT ink bundle, which is bloody amazing to me, people are going to end up with inks they can't use!  If you don't want to buy the horrendously priced XL pack at £112, you will have to purchase the advertised pack then purchase the XL red and grey separately because they only do XL which will leave you with Light Cyan and Light Magenta lying around doing nothing

BE CAREFUL!

 Now I have discovered how to retrieve the gobbled up piece of paper, and read through the manual, and ready to print, ( i hope) but it has taken an hour to get to this stage. Newcomers need to realise there are 3 ways of inserting paper, and they all need studying before you feel confident. I would also say it's a bit 'plasticky' and appears to need a bit of taking care of. I bought for it's capacity to take thicker papers, (and thiner materials)

It has taken me sometime to get started although I am familiar with other Epson printers. I put a piece of paper in the back as per other printers and it was gobbled up and I could find no trace. The sheet of instructions was difficult to follow as each English instruction was followed by 5-6 other languages - and nowhere could I find an instruction about gobbled up paper which is nowhere to be seen. I am making much more progress now I have googled the full instructions

 (Not sure what's on the disc as I have no disc drive on the laptop.) Took a while to find the original manual by Epson as google offers you lots of them. Now I have discovered how to retrieve the gobbled up piece of paper, and read through the manual, and ready to print, ( i hope) but it has taken an hour to get to this stage.
