The Best Emergency Radio Money Can Buy? Eton Sidekick Honest Review

 Currently, I only get the severe weather alert if the radio is also on, which is annoying and impractical. I read the user manual hoping to get some clarity on the different settings but the included manual was severely lacking in detail. Next I tried visiting the website, hoping I could download a more in-depth pdf version… nope. So then I contacted customer support thinking they’d provide some insight on my unanswered questions but the person who answered my email was so incredibly ignorant of the product that I am truly amazed that’s who was chosen to be a customer’s first encounter with their brand! I asked her to please ask someone else since she didn’t know the answers, she begrudgingly agreed to but never responded to my follow up questions! I feel like I spent $80 on basically a hand crank flashlight, I’m not impressed

Anemic user manual  and nonexistent customer support makes this product difficult to use

PROS - The build feels durable. - The crank feels durable enough for the task. - I like the setting where it will monitor the weather channel in silence, and only come on if there is an emergency announcement. The Midland radios sound an alarm, but this radio can be set to alarm or WX station audio (which I prefer)

Too cool to be useful

 The solar power did charge the batter up fully within a day ( I left it near a window when I went to work)  The only reason I can’t give it 4/5 stars as a emergency radio is 1) It’s not waterproof. Which would be critical in a weather emergency 2) it’s very tippy. So again, in a emergency situation, and needing it to solar charge, it’s important to stand up. A couple of design fixes and it would be great! ( maybe add a wet bag protector? And flip out base legs?) I like it and find it very useful overall

  In its defense, I will say it seems to be solidly built. The crank mechanism feels sturdy, as does the case. And especially - unlike a lot of other emergency radios i looked at, it does receive S.A

As other reviewers have observed, the idea of hiding the teensy buttons used to program and operate this device about an inch under the handle and label them with even teensier writing seems to run contrary to the idea of it being something to use in an emergency.  My first couple of experiences in trying to set it up: (After getting out the magnifying glass both for the radio itself and the manual. Also teensy.):  The manual says the radio needs to be off when programming the clock
