Combining legendary grip and a comfortable interior, Five Ten’s Freerider is a long-time favorite. The shoe’s main calling card is its sticky Stealth S1 rubber and dotty tread pattern, which provide a reliable and secure connection to your pedals for everything from long uphill grinds to popping off jumps and navigating technical features. As the name indicates, Five Ten’s Freerider Pro is an upgraded variation of the popular Freerider shoe. For another $50, you get a lighter and more water-resistant synthetic upper, stiffer midsole for better shock absorption, and sleeker look that forgoes the standard model’s skate shoe-like styling. In addition, the toe box has been reinforced and includes some foam padding to provide an additional layer of protection from impacts (although we’ve found the standard Freerider’s toe box to be pretty tough). Who should opt for the Pro model over the cheaper Freerider? If your local terrain is particularly tough or you get out in wet conditions, the synthetic upper material is a nice upgrade over the heavier and more absorbent leather/mesh combination that comes on the standard model. On the other hand, you’re not getting significant improvements in on- and off-bike traction or fit with the simple lacing systems, and both models will have fairly short lifespans due to the soft rubber compound. The stiff midsole provides excellent transfer of power to the pedals and helps keep foot fatigue to a minimum, while a little flex through the toe allows for relatively normal off-the-bike walking. We found the medium volume fit to be comfortable, and it should suit a huge range of foot shapes. The shoes offer just enough foot protection without feeling overly bulky and heavy on the feet.  So if you get caught with your toes hanging a little bit low like I do sometimes and you knock it off of a rock or a root or something, it protects your toes from that impact. Another thing is this entire upper is this synthetic material. I Don't know that this is technically waterproof I Don't think that it is, but it does seem to repel water pretty well and when it does get wet, it dries quickly. Now, this synthetic material also seems to be a lot more durable

 My feet would sweat a lot and they would really really stink with the free rider Pros: I Have not noticed my feet stinking as much and they're definitely not getting as sweaty so that's definitely a plus. But what really is the difference between the free Rider Pro and the regular free rider? and is it worth the extra money? Well, first and foremost, one of the things that the Free Rider Pro has is an impact resistant toe box here.  Like I said. I've been wearing them for about nine months now and they're still in great shape. I Have no reason to believe that they're going to be needing to be replaced anytime soon, so you can probably get two, maybe three years depending on how often you ride out of these shoes. So even though they're a bit on the pricey side, it can be worth it just for the fact that they last a long time

Seasoned rider moving from clips to flats

Ok, but not fantastic.

 I'm sure that you probably feel the same way. The only downside I would say to the these shoes are they're pretty expensive at 150 dollars. If you don't have a pro deal or something like that, it is a pretty expensive shoe. That being said, I imagine they're going to last for several seasons because of how they seem to be holding up so far, and I know that a lot of people that like these shoes and ride with them for a long time, so I'm expecting them to hold up for a lot of time

 I do like my mountain bike shoes to fit well, but also I like them to fit tight because I don't want my feet to be moving around as I'm riding. I would rather have them be tight and uncomfortable when I'm walking around, then comfort when I'm walking around and not tight enough when I'm riding. I'm sure that you probably feel the same way. The only downside I would say to the these shoes are they're pretty expensive at 150 dollars

 It's great how durable they are so you can wear them out on the town and you can go for a bike ride. You can run them into things and you can just sponge them off and they look really nice. They do clean up really quickly and easily. I probably should have cleaned them up for this, but we just got off the ride

 Lastly, they're very durable shoe. You can run these shoes into rocks and the pedals, whatever it may be, and it doesn't really faze them at all. It's great how durable they are so you can wear them out on the town and you can go for a bike ride. You can run them into things and you can just sponge them off and they look really nice

I am looking to upgrade my wife's bike. She is riding an entry level hardtail with minimal bells and whistles (Specialized Jynx). Unfortunately a major upgrade (e.g. new bike) isn't in the budget with a new baby, so I am wondering what the best bang-for-your-buck upgrade is that I can make to her existing bike. Something that would make a noticeable difference in her riding experience. I am leaning towards an air fork or a dropper post. Does anyone have recommendations based on similar experience?

Best component upgrade for a relatively inexperience rider on a basic hardtail?

Awesome - until they weren't

 but those bottom rubbers definitely aren't going to last six months. Keep that in mind, It's kind of like a 3c max grip tire. That tire is great, but it's not going to last very long. Hopefully this helps your purchase

 No, I wanted the white ones, but they didn't have them. so the toe box is super low profile. I'm really a fan of low profile shoes. I don't want to wear work boots on my pedals, so five stars on the low profile toe box

 Definitely the worst pedal ever made. Um, these fit though. like fits the shoe better. Highlights of these shoes are the small front toe box, the longevity of them

 I'm really a fan of low profile shoes. I don't want to wear work boots on my pedals, so five stars on the low profile toe box. They feel pretty good. Kind of enjoying the low profile lower toe box than the regular free rider

Because the shoe is so stiff (which is good for its purpose) the skinny nature of it does introduce a tight fit for people with wider feet. With normal shoes 10.5 fits comfy but with these it’s a little snug on the sides, I might just need to break them in but they’re definitely my size, I have more than enough length that they fit my toes comfy. Will update after a bit of use and tell you if they break in
