 When I'm trying to put an espresso portafilter, I remember that I used to find it quite hard to dial in and the reason why? The portal filter size of this espresso maker is 46 millimeters, which is smaller than a standard commercial size of 58 millimeters which means the coffee bed is going to be smaller but deeper and you may have to change the grind size and go a little bit closer. Flare: I've just released a new manual espresso maker which is a Flair 58 which cover exactly the same points. So if you're looking for something where you don't have too many parts, you're not really fond of having an extra step where you have to preheat the group heads and you would like to stick to a 58 millimeters Porter filter, you might want to consider the Flare 58. Flair Pro 2 | 6 months review | Worth it?

It seems that there is a design issue with the pressure gauge : the material is plastic and when you press the hand lever down, the pressure gauge tends to bend backward which results additional pressure at the end part, not into the middle part. So, it cracked after a few months of usage (I've never applied more pressure than 9 PSI). Also, the rubber cover at the hand lever is attached to the metal with three rubber joints. Two of them have broken after 3-4 usage

Not one to trust a cabin rental coffee situation, I brought along my Flair Pro 2 and Bellman on my family spring break getaway. Pulled 40 g  espresso from 18 g of Onyx Geometry. Paired it with steamed Califia Barista Blend Oat Milk.

Great for one double shot. Bush league if making espresso for two.

I recently convinced my boss to let me buy a new coffee grinder for work, and the clear and obvious choice for me after having been into this sub for the past year was the Encore. At home I use a Jx pro and I love it - I go back and forth between v60 or Kalita 185 and espresso on the flair pro2 and I have no complaints, but its not feasible at work and I will only be brewing pour overs. I had the Encore shipped to my house with the idea of dialing it in (ie playing with it lol) before I brought it over to work, so naturally I was curious to see how the two compared as they are close to the same price. 

I brewed the same v60 recipe on each (20g in 320g out, water off the boil, Hoffmann/Rao method) and the coffee I'm using is Passenger Montecarlos El Salvador gesha - a really wonderful washed gesha with a lot of strawberry and chocolate notes to accompany the silky floral thing that I am a big fan of. Thats about as scientific as it got, I did not taste them blind, or test the extractions or anything like that. This is just some dude on the internet's caffeinated ramblings essentially so take it for what it's worth.

I used the Encore for a few days and today after feeling like I had made my best cup thus far, I made the same recipe with the jx pro. This is my initial impressions after tasting both - The Jx pro was clearly better, and it wasn't as close as I thought it was going to be. For almost the exact same drawdown times (3:05ish on the encore 3:00ish on the jx) the clarity and separation of flavors was much more pronounced on the jx pro. Additionally, the encore's brew had almost a bitter aftertaste that was not present at all on the jx pro brew - this was really noticeable to me and 

 I did expect the jx pro to be better, but it exceeded my expectations, and I think its reasonable to assume that the regular Jx (which is actually the same price as the encore) would perform similarly for v60. If your top concern is convenience, its no contest of course - the Encore worked great and I will be so happy to have it at work, but I will probably not bring very special coffees over there as I feel like I would be shortchanging myself a bit. If your top concern is quality in the cup, the decision is easy - Hand grinder all the way. Hopefully this is helpful to anyone trying to decide whether to go manual vs electric!

Anyone compared a Jx pro or similar level hand grinder with a more expensive electric? NZ maybe? After this little experiment Im super curious at what price point does an electric outperform a premium hand grinder?

Baratza Encore vs 1zpresso Jx pro - an unofficial unscientific review

It’s good

So I kinda want to upgrade to an espresso kit at home, but I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.  

Right now, I mostly brew coffee using a surprisingly decent pair of shockingly cheap cuisinart products---a random $60 burr grinder (DBM-8) that they make, and a drip coffeemaker (DCC-3200).  When I want to get a little nicer, I break out the aeropress that I've had basically since they came out.  And honestly, I'm pretty satisfied with that setup---I'm very picky about the beans I use, and with high quality beans it seems to work pretty well for me.  So I keep kicking around the idea of upgrading to a proper pourover setup and deciding that the extra expense and trouble won't bring me *that much* better coffee to be worth it.

But espresso is a different story.  I'd really love to be able to make myself a capp at home.  But also, nothing's nastier to me than bad espresso. So if I'm going to do that, I'm going to do it right---which I guess means sinking a couple grand into equipment.  Which... I make enough money that I can afford that, but not enough that it wouldn't sting, you know?  I guess it pays for itself in a couple hundred drinks, but will I actually make a couple hundred drinks?

Having never pulled a shot before, I'm pretty hesitant to make that kind of commitment, to the expense, and to the effort (especially maintenance).  What if I hate making espresso at home, and then I end up with a pile of extremely expensive equipment moldering on my counter?  

Has anyone been in this kind of situation?  How do you tell if taking the plunge is a good idea?

What I'd ideally do is take a class, in a nice third wave cafe somewhere where I can basically pay good baristas to watch me pull shots and tell me where I'm screwing up for a few hours---and then I could buy equipment with some confidence that I had some idea how to work it, or decide I hate it and skip it.  I'm in a very major city (Chicago), so you'd think such a thing would exist... but I can't find one. (Possibly because covid?) So I'm kind of at a loss... all suggestions appreciated!

Advice on taking the espresso plunge?

The media could not be loaded. I've always loved espresso, but only during the pandemic felt the need to brew some at home.  I had a cheap espresso machine with pressurised baskets, and the difference with the Flair PRO 2 has been night and day. I've been using it for two weeks, and have already pulled (or pushed?) a couple of amazing shots, as you can see in the pictures (that's a dark medium roast, 20% robusta and 80% arabica)

 I could actually choke it with my manual Xeoleo grinder a couple of clicks away from the finest setting. The flip-side of this is that it is very difficult to find accessories (like distributors and tampers), which are overpriced in comparison to larger products for 51mm baskets.  The only thing I'm still struggling with is thermal management. As it's not plugged to the mains, you have to pre-heat the brew head either by placing it on top of your kettle or filling it with boiling water a couple of times

 I'm not so bothered by the time this takes as by the fact I can't control temperature very well. I want to get some temp strips from their official site to get more consistency, and maybe also experiment a bit.

This machine does not only have a naked portafilter, but also a pressure gauge that enables both pressure profiling and real time control, which (so far as I know) you can only find at higher price ranges. Moreover, the smaller diameter of the basket (46mm) is more forgiving on your grinder, since it requires a coarser grind (the height of the puck increases the resistance)

  The only thing I'm still struggling with is thermal management.
