It still goes through the cloud to do OCR, even for email, and there are some obnoxious limitations on the number of scans you can do per month before you need to pay for yet another subscription you need like a hole in the head, so I wouldn't advise it. Plus it still has a LCD control panel with options that will only confuse a technophobe. Some multifunction printers have document feeders and scan to email functionality, and they definitely work without a PC, like my Epson EcoTank ET-16600, but that's going to be overkill for your mother.
