 Some people find the 1000 didn't have enough battery life, the 1030 claims to get up to 20 hours and more importantly you can add an external battery pack which Garmin makes and more or less double that. Where previous out front mounts placed your Garmin quite high up, the new one is more or less completely flush with the bar and in addition to that it's got a quarter turn mount on the bottom of the device and that's where you can attach an external battery or other accessories like Garmin's Varia radar or their smart lights. Another key new feature is what Garmin calls trend line popularity routing, that's navigation thing where when it's trying to decide on a route after you've entered a destination on the device it uses all the data it's gathered from gun connect users to figure out where the best place to send cyclists is. Trend line works for both on and off road, it doesn't care whether you're on tarmac or not

With the 1030 you get the latest, greatest iteration of Strava integration which means you can have live segments and all that stuff. Some of that functionality does depend on you having a Strava premium account but if you can afford a 1030 you can probably afford a Strava premium as well

 Garmin has launched its new flagship all-singing, all-dancing GPS model and it's called the Edge 1030 or 1030 because that's easier to say. Looks like this. The Edge 1030 is a successor to the Edge 1000 and it brings the flagship model in line with the Edge 820 aesthetically and in terms of features as well. So the Edge 1000 had a three inch touch screen, the 1030 has a three and a half inch touch screen and they've moved the start stop and lap buttons onto the front of the device facing the rider

He graciously responded and here is what he responded, (note, my msg to him included the fact that I was trying to clarify this HRM issue  on the r/garmin thread), “It’s the garmin Tri HRM. The blue one. As you might now, it can store HR data. So I put it in ope water swim mode, and download all swim, bike and run HR afterwards.”

I just watched the Olympic Triathlon and noticed something about the winner. Actually none of the athletes I saw were wearing watches. They had a strap on each ankle, presumably for timing, but I noticed the winner seemed to be wearing a Garmin HRM Tri. I'm not much of a Triathlon expert at all so was wondering if anyone could explain why if he wasn't wearing a watch? And why no one was wearing a watch? Are they not allowed in specific events?

 Now we're going to dive right into it with a freebie feature, not on the official 13 items, which is the color change. As you may have noticed, it's now black as opposed to the previous white that there was there. Now they also had an Edge 1030 version for a Bontrager that was black, but this one is now the legit base Garmin Edge 1030 Plus is simply black. The price remains the same at 599 bucks

 In some cases, twice as fast isn't really that much of a difference, right? But overall, things seem to be a little quicker, a little bit crispier. Practically speaking, I'm not really sure this is making too much of a difference. You're still not at the same level of speed as something like the Hammerhead Kuru, which is just so beautifully phoned fast. But again, the battery life is, depending on how you judge it, one quarter of this thing right here

 But that is the one most visible place to see the routing improvements. And I couldn't see it there. Now, one thing that you can see and you will hear is the final item on the list, which is the new beeper. If you are a Garmin aficionado, a Garmin person, if you've been around the Garmin block a long time, then you're going to hear a new beep right here

 I'm going to open up a Friday 42 kilometer loop on both of these loading course. You can see that went a lot faster. Let's try to the map here. That went a little bit faster

Garmin Edge 1030 Plus Review: 13 New Things To Know!

This is a great GPS, much better than my Edge 800. The display is much more visible than my 800, and battery life much longer. Those were the main reasons that I purchased it, so I was not disappointed. One problem I've had though: I can't get the blue-tooth link to my phone to work

 What it does is look at your activity history and just suck up all that data and populate your ride profiles with anything that you had set up previously and then it'll also bring in all the paired sensors that you had previously paired with other devices. What's cool is that it even retains all the custom naming of the sensors if you did that before. So the setup process is going to be a lot easier, especially if you have a lot of old sensor setup or if you have a lot of activity profiles that are set up on previous Garmin devices. But now onto some of the new navigation features

And then on the safety and tracking front, there's also going to be a new live track feature where the people who are viewing your live track can not only see where you're at and where you've been, but also where you intend to go if you're using a course. So all you do is enable this little toggle in the live track settings and then the route will show on the live track map, which is going to be really cool

So the original Edge 1030, it's going to be a really good choice for somebody who wants a bike computer with some robust navigation capabilities, but Garmin improved upon that with the 1030 Plus, which is going to have some new hardware, some new navigation capabilities, including some that are specific for mountain biking, a new streamlined setup process, and quite a bit more. So I've been testing the new 1030 Plus alongside the new 130 Plus, which I have right here for about the last few weeks ago. I use my iPhone 12 Pro for data and routes right now but am interested in a cycling computer. I'm taking longer rides now and getting more serious about monitoring my progress. iPhones are really comfortable for me and if I'm investing in a cycling computer, it would be great to find some familiarity both in usability and size.

It doesn't seem like something like the Bolt or 530 would get me what I want.

Kind of eying the Garmin 1030 but open to suggestions. Any ideas from this knowledgable group would be appreciated.

Cycling Computer Similar to an iPhone

If you use a third party maping program, like Ride With GPS, to develop routes you should be fine, but if you develop routes with the installed maps be ready for trouble, you may find youself trying to follow a road to nowhere.
