I'm getting back into bike touring after being away from it for a long time. I'd like to get a bike computer - both for touring and for indoor training. Long-time lurker here, but I spend a lot of time on this sub dreaming about cycling from the UK to China (one day!). Done a fair few small bike tours, and I'm looking for a navigation option for the tours I've got planned for this year. Based in the UK.  


I've done trips following paper maps, or only following my nose with the NCN signs ([https://www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network](https://www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network)), or using my phone with Komoot / GoogleMaps etc., or a combination of all the above.  


Basically, all of the above have drawbacks, and whilst I know phones are pretty much the best option, my phone is old and the battery SUCKS, and I hate the anxiety of trying to preserve as much charge as possible, or faffing around having to stop and turn it on, work out where I am, and turn it off again. My first trip with the phone I had Komoot running in airplane mode, with the screen asleep and only flashing up when a turn was coming, and it lasted 2 hours...  


Paper maps cost a fortune, as you have to buy loads of them to cover the whole area of my tours in a small enough scale, and the NCN signs... well, they don't go everywhere, and sometimes they lead you down some bat-shit crazy routes, if they are even sign-posted.  


A dedicated device seems the best option - I only need it for navigation pretty much, and I don't want to have to worry about the battery life as much. Happy to take a few power banks with me. Looking at week-long tours and wild camping, so no guarantee of a plug socket over night.  


Done a lot of research on here and the internet at large and basically I'm stuck between a Bolt V2 or a Garmin 530, or blowing shit loads on a Garmin 1030. Open to recommendations, and would appreciate any insight!

I am planning to do my first big solo tour this summer which will take me around 3 months. My goal is to cycle from Germany to the North Cape which means there will be at least some parts where there is not much around me. A worry of mine is that my phone which I am using for navigation and communication could break in some way. I have looked at a few back-up solutions like the Garmin inReach products but they are pretty expensive. Another option which would only help with navigation would be to buy paper maps. I haven't done a lot of routing on real maps yet but maybe some of you have used them in the past and could tell me a bit about the experience.

So, how do you deal with that phone issue? Do you just accept the risk or do you have any other solutions for the communication / navigation setup?

Alternative solutions for phones as sole navigation and communication device

Great overall with one odd flaw

I use my iPhone 12 Pro for data and routes right now but am interested in a cycling computer. I'm taking longer rides now and getting more serious about monitoring my progress. iPhones are really comfortable for me and if I'm investing in a cycling computer, it would be great to find some familiarity both in usability and size.

It doesn't seem like something like the Bolt or 530 would get me what I want.

Kind of eying the Garmin 1030 but open to suggestions. Any ideas from this knowledgable group would be appreciated.
