It’s in the title I have about an 80 budget he’s into survival and general woods type activities it will not be treated like a toy but I do see it getting used.  I was looking at survival knives on Amazon and they all look pretty cheap under 20 bucks and I’m looking to get him something to start a collection with. He had a collection of pocket knives and already has one other blade but it’s in the under twenty type with the compass on it that breaks. I am sure you know what I’m talking about.  TIA

. you have to stabilize the sheath at the same time as you are trying (at an awkward angle) to pop the knife out of the sheath with your thumb. And that is assuming it is hanging where you want it to in the first place, which, if you're moving around much, it probably won't be. The pics show the relative movement that is easily possible and that makes removing it difficult

 But for something like this, the sheath is an integral aspect of the design, and unless you plan to use it with a MOLLE setup, I'd suggest getting something else. The retention system works very well and holds the knife very securely - you have to grip the handle and push pretty hard on one of the ambidextrous thumb ledges to disengage the knife from the sheath. This thing is in no danger of falling out on accident! I would imagine that if you had the sheath secured to the front of your body armor or on a pack shoulder strap, you could grab it and yank it out.

Hard to use without MOLLE

Any suggestions for a fixed blade with a glass break for EDC . I have a Tesla and the door open is a button and apparently when accidents happen the electronics don’t always work.

 Now it seems the knives don't even survive a day out of the package. Gerber gets a lot of hate for using "cheap" 420 HC stainless steel. I'm no steel expert so I can't speak to that, though I do know treatment and tempering play a big part, and that may be where they are lacking.  I would give 1 or 2 stars, but Gerber supposedly has lifetime guarantees on their knives and will replace them, and I don't think it's fair for me to down rate that much without first giving the company a chance to make it right (I don't have the knife in my possession anymore or I would)

Secondly, in doing some 'simulated' feathering I felt that the cutout in the middle of the grip made it a bit too skinny for my hand. Overall though it's such a nice piece that I probably would have kept it in spite of these limitations, if it wasn't for the finish on the blade, which was just not satisfactory. The grind was rough, unequal on the two sides, uneven (wandering) along the length of the blade and on one side, the bevel stopped short of the tip

 Where there should have been a finely honed point there was a one-sided cutting edge and a little lump of metal sticking up from the tip. It's disappointing to see this coming out of Portland - it really looked like whoever put the grind on this knife was checking their facebook at the same time. You can have state-of-the-art manufacturing, but it's the last person to touch it who controls what the customer thinks of your product. I feel that Gerber could take an extra minute to put a bit better edge on their product, and maybe finish with a finer grit rather than leaving it essentially micro-serrated

Decided not to keep it, here's why

I found the handle does get slippery when wet, especially the top and bottom part of the handle that is in line with the spine and edge of the blade as that portion is smooth and without the diamond pattern.  Also, the thumb/finger guards near the spine and blade respectively were very slippery even when dry.  I used grip tape for the handle which seems to hold for now, however grip tape for the thumb guards always slid off after a few days.  I decided to stipple the thumb guards with a soldering iron (most people use a wood burner tool instead for stippling

 No one is going to look at you sideways when you use it for pedestrian tasks.  The sheath is over hyped, sure its great if you want to throw it on a backpack but the CC options are not plenty. Also, one of the belt positions(would be the best position too) isn't usable because of bad engineering. It does stay in place great when it knocks into stuff from sticking out too far because of that flaw though

Dull out of the box.

 The BG Ultimate Pro came with a perfect edge grind and it's made in China, I thought MADE IN AMERICA stood for quality, guess I was wrong, that's 2 knives with horrible edge grinds. I have bought 3 MADE IN AMERICA Strongarms, so far only 1 is a keeper.  ****Gerber sent me a new knife with a decent edge and accomplished what the seller could not. Their customer service is very good but it does not make up for turning out botched edge grinds

The product arrived with a terrible edge grind, uneven and rolled edge, I am exchanging it, hopefully for a new one. The first one had been repackaged. The weight of the knife feels good and I think if I get one with a decent edge on it I will love it and probably give it 4 stars. The grip is slim but it feels good in the hand

Poor craftsmanship, good customer service

The knife looks and feels strong and well made. It and cuts very well and came sharp. The edge grinds are even. The main body of the sheath is sturdy and well put together

 Whoever invented this (and whoever approved this design as well!) should be fired. Its ridiculous. The knife/sheath just flop around twisting and turning on this thin piece of webbing. I can't wait to get after it and replace that part of the sheath with something that will actually work properly

Knife is Great, Sheath Leaves Plenty to be Desired

 I bought this because I wanted another fixed blade and I like Gerber knives. I havenât had a chance to use it yet but it feels the same as my old Serrated Strongarm and I expect to get many many years out of it.
