We recently tested the revamped Baltoro 75 while trekking in Patagonia, and the pack stayed true to its intentions as one of the most comfortable and feature-rich designs on the market. Along with the changes outlined above, the new version also includes a highly customizable hipbelt and shoulder straps (great for achieving a perfect fit), drops the built-in Sidekick daypack (not a big loss, in our eyes), and uses more recycled materials. But as before, the Baltoro’s biggest downside is its weight: The 75-liter model clocks in around 5 pounds, which is about twice the heft of the 70-liter Hyperlite Southwest mentioned above. In short, if you aim to keep things light and simple on a backpacking trip, this probably isn’t the pack for you. I’m a near 40 yo married dad of 7 and 4 yo boys. I’ve done a bit of (mainly car) camping in the past. Now that my boys are older I’d really like to get into backpacking as a family. 

As far as a backpack for me, there are a few test cases:
1) dad pack, probably quite large to carry food, treats, extras for my family to have a good time. 
2) solo pack, to go by myself or on a guy’s trip.
3) winter pack. I love winter and can see myself heading out into the snow. A few weeks ago I slept in a snow fort my boys made just for fun. 

FYI, I walk my dog each evening 2 miles with 35 lbs weight plates on my back, now with crampons for ice. I’m in the weight room 2-3x / week for squats &amp; deadlifts. I am 6’4” 230lbs with a fair spare tire. 

I am thinking about a large, budget friendly pack: the Teton Grand 5500 (90L). 

I can hedge my bet a bit by getting 50-60L pack for my 5’9” 130lbs wife. 

I might get a cute lil pack for my 7yo.

Let me know what you think! I really appreciate your collective wisdom.

What size backpack?

 Having a modular system to swap out different types of pockets/phone holders, etc, would be fantastic.  I personally had trouble getting a water bottle in/out of the special side pocket designed for it, but it didn't seem to be a problem for other people, but maybe my arm just doesn't bend that much backward.  However, that being said, it is a damn fine backpack, very comfortable loaded with 65lbs of gear, really easy to adjust so I could periodically shift weight to and from my hips to just give different muscles a break as needed. I liked the organization of the pack, easy to find what I was looking for without a lot of effort

 This thing is built on a seriously sturdy platform and is excellent for long haul backpackers or expeditions with the focus on fit but not compromising on other features.  The silicone grip overlay prevents slippage, so the pack stays in place throughout those long hikes. Some quick additional features that can be found on this backside include - hip belt pockets, one of them being a water-resistant weather shield pocket with a YKK aqua guard zipper which is perfect for a phone or a GPS device. The other pocket is mesh and it's great for snacks. There's also a sunglass quick stow system on the shoulder harness so you can access your shades without taking the pack off

 The pre-curved construction of those parts will help to eliminate chafing and hot spots. Even more, you can adjust the torso length slightly by moving the shoulder straps between the two slotted options on the frame With the Baltoro, you can even completely remove the shoulder harness and the hip belt to swap for different sizing, giving you a truly customized pack fit. Continuing with the back panel, the entire padded portion is called the matrix ventilated back panel. The foam itself is structural and is fully wrapped in a breathable mesh

 It's a tubular aluminum frame that defines the whole perimeter of the pack itself. This is going to help drive the weight down to your hips and help keep the pack close to your back so there's less of a fatiguing factor throughout your hike. It also has an anti barreling stay which is going to allow the frame to hold its shape under heavier loads, Again, enhancing the comfort. What really beefs up the comfort and the performance of this pack is how the shoulder straps and hip belt work

So this question really consists of two parts 

1. 

I’m looking at the Osprey Aether Pro 70 litre and really like everything about it. My only concern is that it doesn’t have a bottom compartment for my tent. If you have a backpack without a bottom compartment do you find it annoying enough that it is actually a problem? If it is going to be a problem then I am also looking at the Osprey Atmos AG 65 which obviously does have a bottom compartment.

If I decide that not having a bottom compartment is actually going to be a problem I am looking for suggestions on backpacks between 65 and 80 litres for less than £300 ($400). My use case is multi day hiking with around 12-13kg (26-29lbs). Hiking around 20-25 miles a day. I really liked the option of having the drawstring hip pocket on the Aether pro 70 and definitely want at least side pockets but preferably both side pockets and a water bottle holder.

Backpack Reccomendation

 * Description/photos indicates that you can store your phone in the waist belt. LOL. I read a similar complaint in a review posted in July 2020; If your phone is newer than say an iPhone 6 (I have an iPhone 12, not the larger Pro model either), your phone ****WILL NOT FIT****. Might be good for your car keys or credit cards still

Solid Backpack

 If the pack is on your back, this would be the left side. You have two compression straps, one here, another one right. Here you have an attachment point for gear such as trekking poles. You have a messy stretchable hydration pocket, flipping the pack over to the other side, two compression straps, gear attachment point, and down

 you do have a compression strap which goes over it because of the way that this is cut. it is very, very tight and I have had issues with empty hydration bottles flying out of this thing. To prevent that from happening. you have to use the compression strap and you really really have to pull that tight

Something about the way this is cut, the way that it's pulling just has a way of just sliding those bottles right out when it comes to the back

 Here you have an attachment point for gear such as trekking poles. Here we have a hydration bottle pocket which is angled towards the user so you can easily grab it, pull your water bottle out, and shove it back in. This really does work well with very narrow water bottles such as this

Pushed it to max weight load... and it didn’t disappoint!

 [Music] [Music] Okay, so I've gotten a chance to get some walking in with this, get some miles in and uh, there's a few things that I really like right off the bat. I really like where this actually sits on me and I like how easy it is to adjust this sternum strap. Sometimes backpacks have really difficult to adjust sternum straps. I also really like this sunglasses holder right here

 Here On the bottom, giving the sleeping bag compartment dedicated access point. To me, that's just a no-brainer I really like having the ability to immediately get at my sleeping bag through a bottom sort of access point. Now, there is a curved zipper here. curved zippers can tend to fail after, say, years of stress, but uh, at the same time it's It's not why I wouldn't I wouldn't buy a backpack over that

 so I have some thoughts. so let's get a little more casual here and take the pack off. And uh, let's break it down. Oh, you just love hiking

Five Great Things, One Awkward Thing: The Revamped Gregory Baltoro 65L Review

I LOVE the u shaped zipper on the front of main compartment. Makes loading, unloading and looking for thing much easier. Hip pockets are great idea but too small for a cell phone (which is what most people would like to do with it). Would prefer separate pocket for sleeping bag, not just tiny removable flap
