 This is an awesome ski for that strong intermediate to advanced level skier who's going to spend nearly all their time on piece but still wants a good longer radius carve down through the front side of the mountain and ample waist width to help you plow through any of the crud or chunks or any of the beat up snow.  And you see that with this nice positive camber underfoot, you know, really good bounce coming out of that ski and just not a whole lot in terms of tip and tail rocker, you know, when that thing is decambered. But yeah, that really makes all the difference in the world when they're, you know, making these different core skis that they're built the same, but they're shaped and profile differently so that they're, they accommodate different things. You know, still a little bit kind of spoonie in the tip here, but that taper is moved well up towards the tip. So that's going to let you engage and initiate the turn easier and quicker in this versus the wider cores, which that taper is down here, makes for more flotation and easier turning in soft snow

 They've taken their core line and just narrowed it up a skosh for this one. So now we go from a 117 down to an 87. So it's a pretty comprehensive line of all-mountain and freeride skis. And the way they differentiate them, you know, their build is all the same, we'll get into that in a sec, but their shaping and profile are different

 So they're built with a caruba wood core with graphene, choroid, and carbon laminate. And those materials are known for being very lightweight and very stiff. So a lot of these core skis are very stiff to the hand flex. This 87 is no different

 But yeah, the big difference between these different core models is the rocker and taper profile. So whereas the 117 is going to have the most rocker and taper, this will have the least. And you see that with this nice positive camber underfoot, you know, really good bounce coming out of that ski and just not a whole lot in terms of tip and tail rocker, you know, when that thing is decambered. I just discovered this sub and I see a lot of these posts, but everyone is different and I appreciate your patience and help finding me some skis! I’ve scoured the internet, blister reviews, ski essentials, etc., but you all seem knowledgeable and helpful so I thought I’d ask here as well.

I’m looking for my first set of skis out of rentals. Here’s my stats:

**Height:** 5’9   
**Weight:** 180lb 
**Where I ski:** East Coast. I live in NC, and ski mostly mid Atlantic stuff (NC, Maryland, WV). Thinking of starting to travel up to the northeast. Looking at trips out West, but I may just rent for that instead of sacrificing on a ski that's better out East where I'll be 95% of my time.
**Ski style:** I’m an early intermediate skier in the mid Atlantic, so I stick mainly to groomed resort slopes. I don’t really prefer high speeds and just want to carve/keep up with my wife. 
**Thoughts I have:** After a lot of research, some of the skis I thought would be good for me are in this list. Definitely open to any input on ski, material, length, size, etc.! Even throw some out that aren't on here if I'm just wrong.
1. **Salomon Stance 80** (161cm or 168cm)
2. **Elan Wingman 78C** (160cm or 169cm)
3. **Salomon QST Spark** (164cm)
4. Essentially, stuff in the 78-85mm underfoot range, nothing too crazy expensive or heavy/hard to maneuver. I'm still learning and not looking to charge too hard.

Another East Coast Ski Recommendation Request

 It's one of those skis that's very approachable for a wide variety. We talk about it leaning towards more of an intermediate skier.  Top of the shape of the ski, very similar to the other ones. It's got a very long camber underfoot, a nice area to flex that ski. It's got a nice tip rise and a little bit of tail rise that's going to get you in and out of those bumps and those trees. Super lightweight

I have a flat pair of Head Kore 87s and 85mm Tyrolia attacks. I would have much preferred to give them to a local ski shop, but the only one near me cost well over double REI and is not a local business. REI is telling me that the brakes will go over the ski but will rub against it too much and could cause long-term damage. They are advising me to return the bindings and get new ones, which I really do not want to do and don't have much time for

 They've also changed the sizing of these skis, so this is a 177, so we've never seen a core in a 177 before. They've switched it from 9 centimeters to a 7 centimeter gap, so a while before there was either a 180 to a 189, we're now seeing a 177, 184 and a 191. So tighter gaps between the sizes, more options for skiers, always a good thing. This is the 177, we've got a 16 meter turn radius, so this is a pretty sharp turning ski here, you know at 87 millimeters underfoot with that radius and with this stiffness as we've seen from the cores in the past

 Welcome to our 2022 ski test. We've got a HeadCore 87 for you today, a couple of changes for this new core for this year. But generally it's about the same, they've just taken out some things and added some things and it makes it a little bit more lively, a little bit more energetic than what we've seen from the cores in the past. And that's a good thing as the old ones are great, if there was any knock about them it's just that they didn't quite have the energy coming out of the turn

 As these cores get wider we'll see a drop in the start of the taper, but in these narrow cores, you know it's right up at the top, minimal tip rocker, really good positive camber underfoot though, and then we see the same practice used in the tail where there's pretty minimal taper, pretty minimal rocker, you know enough to make it release from the turn which with a ski this stiff does definitely help to have even this minimal amount of rocker to it as it doesn't lock you in the turn. You know that's more what we would see from their frontside skis, but for an all-mountain ski like this I think that that's a really good, really smart way to go about it is to still have that rocker profile in there. So yeah, this definitely has a wide range of skier types, I would say it depends more on the terrain and conditions that you find yourself skiing more often versus how good or aggressive you are. While in the past we've said that more light weight skiers will enjoy these skis, I think that the new construction and the difference in sizing definitely makes it so that a heavier, more aggressive skier will find more to like about these than in the past

 So yeah, this definitely has a wide range of skier types, I would say it depends more on the terrain and conditions that you find yourself skiing more often versus how good or aggressive you are. While in the past we've said that more light weight skiers will enjoy these skis, I think that the new construction and the difference in sizing definitely makes it so that a heavier, more aggressive skier will find more to like about these than in the past. So while we've kind of shied away in the past of saying a heavier, more aggressive skier might not fit well into this, I think that those days are done and Head really has made the appropriate changes to increase that range of skier type. So intermediates to experts, you know pretty much all levels of aggressiveness, these updates kind of address those issues in a successful way

It has come down to the following: HEAD Kore 87 (size 180), FISHER Ranger 94 FR (size 185 or 177, i dont know which one) and ATOMIC Vantage 90 TI (size 184), all with MARKER Griffon 13 ID bindings. I am 185 cm tall and 75 kg, and I would call myself light advanced skier.

 So adding that energy into the camber of the ski. And then just not a ton of rocker. I mean, we do have a nice splay here, but the rocker doesn't start very far into the ski. And so we see that same thing with the taper where the widest part is closer to the tips and then that theory follows through to the tail as well

 You know, we kind of find that lighter weight skiers who prefer a shallower edge angle really enjoy the quickness and maneuverability of this ski. And then heavier skiers like myself also enjoy it for the opposite reason that they can bend it and create that higher edge angle. So there is a wide range of skiers who will enjoy these cores and just the overall shape profile and construction make it stand out from a lightweight and stiff flex perspective. We've got a Head Core 87 for you today, the narrowest of these core range of skis, and the most frontside oriented, although it still falls pretty squarely into that all-mountain category, with a little bit of a freeride flair because it is based on a wider version of this ski

 So pretty darn light, even encroaching upon that 1,500 gram mark that we often talk about as being great for a touring option. So uphill skiing is certainly on the table when you're talking about these core series of skis. 16 meter turn radius in this one. So it does like to come across the fall line, not as much camber, I'm sorry, not as much rocker or taper as we see in the wider versions

Head kore 87 is probably the best ski at its price point. I got a pair this season, and they work very well on the glaciers of the east.

I currently have Sick Day 94s and they are super fun. But where I am, the weather has been worse each year, and now at least 80% of days are hard-pack artificial snow with icy patches everywhere. I was considering for those days to use something more like the K2 Disruption, a Stance 84, a Head V6 or something a little more carving oriented. As an ok intermediate that loves the sport, I do plan on developing my skills, but I am also ok not going 100000 mph down what are already small hills around here.

Thoughts?
