Here’s everything Google TV does that Apple claims ‘smart TVs don’t’

This is my third Hisense TV, the first two were budget models we picked up for bedrooms. I read rave reviews on this display and picked it up for my living room. To be clear, Android TV was a major selling point on this for me. I have either an NVIDIA Shield or a Xiaomi MiBox on every television in the house and we stream everything through the Google platform

 First up, at the time I set mine up one of the streaming apps did not support Dolby Vision on this TV for some reason. I could plug my Shield into the TV and use Dolby Vision fine but the app installed directly on the TV did not recognize Dolby Vision. This has since been fixed by the company (the one with the mouse logo) but it was a concern when I first set this up and it is not confidence inspiring going forward. My next issue was that the system was very slow, changing between menus and apps had a lag and sometimes when I hit the button on the remote it would produce a sound that it registered but would take five or so seconds to process

A great display let down by poor Android TV hardware

Hisense H9G/U8G - amazing picture quality that gives high end Samsung QLEDs are run for the money.

TCL 6 Series - Doesn't reach up to the Hisense but still a great TV TV with 4k120 and VRR (huge deal at it's price).

If you check FoMo's YouTube channel he breaks down the strengths, weaknesses & general focus of each brand. Hisense, TCL & Vizio are all in the same category as they're considered budget brands. The basic breakdown is this...

Vizio concentrates on features... Bells & Whistles while delivering a good but not incredibly accurate picture.

Hisense focuses on picture quality first & foremost. In this area they run with more expensive brands. They don't pay much attention to extra features.

TCL is somewhere between the two. They have a better picture than Vizio but not quite as good as Hisense. They have better features than Hisense but not to the extent of Vizio.

Take your pick. I'm all about picture quality so of the three I'd go Hisense. We have Hisense & TCL displays at my job and I would agree that Hisense's picture is better than that of TCL. Also, TCL's cabinet & remote reek of cheap. Personally I'm a Sony guy.

The question I have is, the Hisense markets itself as utilizing ULED technology,  which is some sort of proprietary technology Hisense uses? What is the difference between that and QLED? Which technology is better? I know OLED is not as bright and gives better blacks, but is more for purely controlled lighting environments, whereas the QLED is more for the living room with lots of windows. Is the ULED more for bright environments like QLED?

Also, one thing I like about the Hisense is that it has Android TV built in. I am a big Nvidia Shield fan, so that is right up my alley. Hisense TV questions

 She advised that when turning it off at night, I should hold the On/Off button for an extra second, and click the on-screen Off button that appeared. Also, that since I purchased the Android rather than Roku version, this is the normal procedure to turn it on/off. Ridiculous! Nowhere in the Amazon description does it state that one tv version is easier to turn on/off than another. And none of the independent raters I reviewed made any mention of this “routine” procedure

I say potentially because the sale could always be something BB doesn't match.  Personally with my Vizio having P\*ssed me off one too many times, I didn't wait myself though I went with the 55 U8G at $849.  So far so good enjoying it.

I wouldn't expect this year's black Friday to be like this years'.  It's a big unknown.  Hisense prices are great right now but they likely will continue to go up on the weekends.

Personally if you know what you want I'd pull the trigger now.  Consumer prices and inflation are skyrocketing right now.

The set was great  at first, but now that's it out of warranty all kinds of issues have started from a dirty screen, to blooming and now a permanent white line on the screen. Their customer service has been equally terrible. You might luck out & get a set that lasts longer than a year, but personally I would look elsewhere.

I am interested in buying the U7G and it is currently at $699 which seems to be the best price it's been at all year. It's so close to Black Friday though, I am wondering if I should wait into the first couple weeks of November. Did anyone buy a Hisense for Black Firday last year and get an idea of how much cheaper the 55in models dropped from their list price? I know it wont necessarily hold true this year but I am trying to look at trends and see what evidence there is that i should wait. $150 off list price seems a fair amount for a mid- range 55in tv. The reason I am hemming and hawing instead of just waiting is the 100 day trial that Hisense is running. That ends October 31st so I am wondering if I should take advantage of that. Amazon has also extended their time of return to January 31st on all purchases from now until December 31st that does take away a bit from the attraction of the Hisense promotion. There is also the chance that it wont be a TV that really goes on sale and only is discounted $100 like normal. Anyway, those are all the variables going through my head. 

Any thoughts on trends from previous years? Worth waiting?

Question

 The TV has taken care of my request only once that I can remember, but is otherwise useless as a Google Device. I can't find any way to just turn off the microphone, which would be the ideal solution. I can turn off Google Assistant on the TV, but then I can't ask Google to "open Plex on the TV", for example, which is one of the main reasons that I went with an Android TV in the first place. Also, asking for a volume change hasn't worked once

 Last, the sound options like "Theater", "Late Night", etc... are nice, but inconsistent

 When I switch to TV Speakers, the lag lessens, but it's still there. Note that I've tried different HDMI cables as well - both brand new high speed cables. Secondary sound issue - the TV unmutes itself after a while (20 minutes, maybe?). A minor annoyance, but one that adds to the frustration of owning this TV

Watching a movie like "John Wick" on "Late Night" works as expected (minimized (and mistimed) gunfire sound, clear dialogue), but something like "Chuck" is ruined because almost all non-dialogue sound is essentially muted. Last night, I had the backlight array come through on the top left. Looks like a twinkling star. Then the blooming/shadows began when alternating between light and dark scenes. I believe Hisense is capable of making the best TVs for the money. This set is covered under an extended warranty until September. 

Do I take a gamble on the new U8G/U88G set, or pay an extra $700 to buy an Open Box LG65C1?? I'ts going in my living room, which has quite a bit of light/glare, and I game heavily on it. The bright room tells me to go with the LED Hisense, but I'll never get another opportunity to save $1000 on an LG C1 OLED.

H9G panel finally dead, upgrade to U88G or try LG OLED???

 - No HDMI 2.1/VRR (I realize this isn't a necessary thing but people will see it as a negative regardless) - Remote doesn't look very premium. It's just black plastic. Just a minor gripe really but I'd like to see something better

 It does very well recognizing what you're saying.  So now I just want to talk about a couple of reasons I really enjoy this set so far (aside from the awesome picture). It has quick access dedicated buttons on the remote for Netflix, Youtube, Prime Video, and Google Play. I use Youtube and Netflix daily

 I'll push the settings button or the volume controls for example while watching a Netflix movie and it can take up to 4 seconds (yes FOUR seconds) before the TV responds. A few times now it has lagged out and simply closed Netflix on me. I literally push the settings button and it throws me out of Netflix. Completely unacceptable

 Perfect since I have a young child who is not good with navigating through menus, but is smart enough to press a specific button when they want to play the PS4!

Great 4K/HDR picture...and that's about it.
