 This is because the way the locking mechanism is, you cannot remove the key unless the bolts are engaged which prevents it from closing. So, I have to keep the key nearby or in the lock, and the key is laughable. I have accidentally bent it several times already. I would just keep the key in the lock to address this, but it's so weak that it will break off in the lock for sure that way (I've had a couple close calls already just from being lightly bumped)

 It's also interesting that the lock cut so easily, which implies it adds very little theft protection in the first place.  EDIT: 15 Mar 2020 - After I bought this on 09 Dec 2019 -- After three months of use, one of the flimsy keys eventually broke off in the lock. The other key is bent like crazy. It's like they are made of tinfoil

 So I keep it unlocked with the keys inside of it most of the time (again: this is being used to protect things from fire not from theft).  With this one, though, you have to lock it if you close it.  But the instructions state that it has to be locked in order to be fire/waterproof. In the meantime, I'm going to find it some wheels to make it easier to move around until I find a permanent home for it.  And just a quick word of advise.

 The lock is certainly not worthy of the safe. Had a problem getting either key in, once in, it would not move left or right, then I couldn't get the dang thing out. After a few minutes of wiggling, it finally unlocked and sure enough, had the same problem getting it locked again. At that point my only thought was how in the world was I going to send this back?? After a few more attempts and then randomly trying it every so often, the lock seems to have loosened up a bit

 Still makes me nervous to put anything in it. I thought I would just leave it unlocked since my main concern is to keep the contents safe from fire/water damage. This is a good case for the amount of money spent. The inside is very well sealed. The outside casing is very strong the handles are pretty good and the locking mechanism seems good enough. The gasket around the door seals very well

Reading between the lines, maybe the fire protection ingredients slowly release moisture into the chest? I noticed it arrived with a desiccant inside

I bought this for my son as a gift for his first home because of the Honeywell name; that it was truly, actually, and decently water and fireproof; and the reviews. But we were disappointed. It didn’t take long before the lock stuck and couldn’t be opened with a key. The worst part was that my son was able to open the safe with a screwdriver! So much for security
