Best bang for your buck is the Ibanez BTB MS. But I would recommend getting a Dingwall. A used or B stock NG3 can sometimes be had for under 2 grand and is 90% as good as a Z3, which means it's still better than the vast majority of other basses on the market. Or a used D-Roc can be had for about 1700.

Recently I picked up an Ibanez BTB 5 string, and it will not sound good through this amp. It sounds great through my little fender practice amp, but once I plug it into my Ampeg setup it sounds dull, overly rounded, and all in all bleh.

Best move I can suggest. Dingwall custom basses (especially with the fretless lined board) will cost you an upwards of $3500usd. If I were you, I’d get an Ibanez BTB fretless/fretted-to-defret. 35” scale (Dominic LaPointe’s - ex-Beyond Creation, First Fragment - fretless bass has a 35” scale), and you can do whatever you want with it.

The only 37" scale basses I would consider are the new Ibanez BTB or the Dingwall of your choice. Every other production bass on the market either has a shorter scale (EHB, every Kiesel), is poorly designed (Spector), or is too cheap and will make compromises (ESP). I had this same dilemma last year and just ended up ordering a Dingwall, nothing else can really compete in my opinion.
