I'm a whetstone novice but can still put a usable edge on my knives, and often do the same for my parents' knives when I'm home. They always comment on how much easier/nicer it is to cut with a sharp knife ... and then use them to cut a cake in a glass baking dish.

I'd like to get them some kind of a sharpener for Christmas. It's also secretly a gift for my peace of mind, because watching my mom hack at an onion, fingers all splayed out, with a dull knife scares the shit out of me. 

So - what's recommended? No, they don't care that they'll give the knives a toothy edge. No, they don't care that they take off too much metal. At their rate of use and sharpening, the knives will still last them forever. It's fine. I've heard the name Chef's Choice a few times? Ideally looking for something under $100.

They are 150% not going to whetstone sharpen anything in this universe or the next, so "just learn to sharpen on a whetstone" is not useful to me. I'll still touch up their knives with mine when I visit.

The hardware:

A Henckels 8" that used to be mine, with a fat spine and a fatter bolster. 

A massive stainless food service grade chef's knife. Don't remember the brand.

Some of those calphalon knives from TJ Maxx with the sticky plastic handle. Not great but surprisingly usable.
