Then I definitely recommend checking out the Terra Ultra G270 from Innovate, so that is a wrap on another shoe review at Run for Adventure. Also Amazon just delivered the Inov-8 Terraultra G270 and that will be going back since, again, way too narrow. My normal shoes size is 9 4E, so the size 10 LP5 was a bit too long for me.

There seemed to be considerable interest in the lead up to the Lone Peak 5 release, so now that they're available to purchase I thought I'd share my thoughts now that I have my hands, er feet, on a pair.

tl;dr: The "normal" width is now noticiably more narrow than before, and the achilles heel rubbing is similar to the 4.5 model as opposed to the earlier models.

I ordered the 8.5 size from REI, who didn't offer the new "wide" size below a size 9. For comparison, I've used and loved Lone Peak 3.0s, 3.5s, and 4.0s, and hiked a few days in the 4.5s before getting debilitating achilles tendon rubbing problems that went away when I switch back to the earlier models.

The new 5.0s seem like a better overall construction -- the sewn toe of the sole looks like it should be sufficient to avoid the inevitable toe peeling of the earlier models, and compared to the 4.0s you can really see the accumulation of small refinements.

Unfortunately, the heel collar of the shoe seems almost completely identical to the 4.5 to my tendons.  While the earlier models had thicker padding and less rigidity in the heel collar, the 4.5s and 5.0s angle in toward your achilles, and are more rigid with less thick padding, causing the rigid part of the heel collar press against my achilles even when I'm not walking.

Width-wise, the 5.0 is slightly narrower -- I measured about 4 inches width compared to about 4.4 inches for the Lone Peak 4.0 and 3.0s in the same size 8.5. It's noticeable, though not terrible when wearing them -- more like wearing a "normal" shoe than the standard glorious toe-spread you'd expect from a pair of Altras.

I'd expect the narrower width to be an issue when hiking for extended periods of time, but I don't think I'm going to find out. Between the heel colar and the width, I'm returning the Lone Peak 5s and continuing my ever elusive search for the perfect wide toeboxed trail runners. I just hope I find them before I run through my stockpile of not-quite-worn-out Lone Peaks.

Altra Lone Peak 5 initial impression

 Men's size nine. We're looking at 9.5 ounces or 270 grams. I do apologize, could not find a women's size 8 for the measurement

 It's what Innovate is calling their adapter fit upper material and this shoe is being advertised as a Long Trail running shoe or an Ultra running shoe. Okay, so the longer you're out on the trails, training, or racing, your feet do tend to swell. meaning they get a little bigger and a little because there's more blood flow down to the feet. And so this material is designed to help flex with your feet as they begin to swell over longer distances

I put 320 miles on my altra escalantes before I retired them and I've put 153 miles on my altra torin's so far. I've been trying to find some good trail shoes for a 60k in april (my first ultra). I tried the altra lone peaks which killed my shins, as well as the hoka speedgoats, which were more comfortable than the loan peaks but still gave me shin issues on my 10 mile run this week. I'm going into the running store this week but does anyone have any recommendations for shoes to check out? The issue I've had is both the lone peaks and the speedgoats were comfortable in the store and at the beginning of my run but about 20 minutes in is when they start bothering me.

The only running shoes that have worked for me (and not caused shin splints) are the altra torin's and escalante's. Any advice for a trail shoe?

Anybody know when companies usually release new trail running shoes? It seems like options from online retailers have gotten very slim lately, which makes me think that it must be about time for new releases to become available soon.

When will new trail shoes release?

I have the chance to get a good deal on a pair of black Inov-8 Terraultra G 270 (now re-branded as Trailfly) and like the fit. If you have suggestions for other shoes, I would be happy to hear about them!. The impossible task of finding a shoe for everything.

I have left Altra and started testing some Inov-8 TerraUltra G270. They are on the widest last that Inov-8 makes but they are not Altra footbox wide by any means. The graphene may be hype but so far, they have had much better wet traction than any Altra model I have owned.

I just got a pair of TR Shoes (Altra LP 5) which fit my wide feet Alright after reading some stuff here. And what can I say? I love them!

I've done a 150km multi day hike through middle germany - no more blisters, foot pain, etc... The only Thing that I found was that the shoes are a little less grippy on wet Rock. 

Anyway. I'm planning a trip to Corse this fall , including (some parts of) the GR20.
As much as I'd love to just take my New TR shoes, I'm a little anxious. What if it rains while I'm on the trail - will me shoes give me enough grip?

The alternative is my meindl hiking Boot, which I'd much rather like to leave at Home - so heavy and always blisters...

What is your experience with (wet) Rock and TR shoes? Would you go for it?

I tried low Lone Peaks 4.5 and they almost instantly peel the skin off my Achilles (Yes, I wore good socks).  I have never had any issues with shoes, ever.  The 5s heel design seems identical. Everyone fucking loves Lone Peaks.

What are some good trail runners or UL options? Looking for something that can get me through a 35 mile one-day hike and a big bonus if it is All-Weather and doesn't require water-proof socks.
